James Alder

James is a manager within Alberta Investment Management’s (AIM) Fund Management Group. AIM is the investment operations group of Alberta Finance, which manages approximately $40 billion in balanced assets for various Alberta public sector pension plans and endowments. The Fund Management Group is primarily responsible for asset allocation advice and investment policy design for internal investment clients. James has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from UBC, and is currently working towards his MBA from Queen’s University. James is also a CFA Charterholder. back to top

 

Tanya Amaya

Tanya is an assistant vice-president at The Bank of New York and leads the Institutional Investor Access team within the Global Capital Markets group. Her previous experience includes marketing at the independent research firm IRG Research and Japanese equity sales at Merrill Lynch. Daniel Apel

Dan is head of Business and Administration Partnering and CFO of Bayer Inc. He is also the senior Finance and Administrative representative for Bayer in Canada. Business and Administration Partnering encompasses the functions of accounting, controlling, finance, information technology, human resources, legal, public policy and communications. Prior to taking on his current role, Dan was in Germany with Bayer A.G. and managed the region North America as it relates to Enterprise Accounting and Reporting.

Martin Belanger

Martin is associate director, Human Resources at the University of Western Ontario, where he oversees the staff and faculty retirement plans. His responsibilities include monitoring the plans investment options, developing governance policies and reporting to the pension board. Previously, he worked at the London Life Insurance Company where he was responsible for asset allocation and investment manager monitoring. He holds a master’s degree in science from HEC Montreal, is a CFA charter-holder and is a fellow of both the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries. back to top

 

Don Bisch

Don is editor of Benefit Canada and provides overall editorial direction on Benefits CanadaCanadian Healthcare Manager and Gestion Santé magazines. Don joined the Rogers Publishing Healthcare and Financial Services Group in April 2000 and has led the editorial team at Canadian Healthcare Manager magazine for the past four years. He holds a master’s of journalism degree from Carleton University and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Waterloo. back to top  


Leo de Bever

Leo is executive vice-president, global investment management, responsible for building MFC Global’s asset management business both in Canada and abroad. He is also responsible for the management of MFC Global’s North American equity and alternative asset investments including structured debt products, real estate, oil and gas, and timber and agriculture. Before joining MFC Global, Leo was senior vice-president, research and economics for the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. Leo’s educational background includes a BA in economics from the University of Oregon, and both an MA and a PhD in economics from the University of Wisconsin. back to top

 

Dexton Blackstock

Dexton is vice-president and director at State Street Global Markets Canada Inc. He joined the firm in 2000. Dexton is responsible for delivering State Street research and trading products to the asset owner community in Canada. In addition to his primary role, he oversees the transition management business as well as assisting in the analysis of the investment portfolios. Dexton brings over 10 years capital markets experience to SSGM. Dexton holds a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Calgary and is currently a member of the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts and the CFA Institute. back to top

 

Steve Bonnar

Steve is a principal in the Toronto office. He has an extensive background in actuarial and employee benefit consulting, having assisted a variety of employers in the design, administration, communication, financing and investment of their pension plans. Since mid-2002, Steve has been responsible for managing large client relationships and for Retirement Financial Management in Canada. Most recently he has co-authored Towers Perrin’s White Paper on how to rejuvenate Canada’s pension system to accommodate the realities of the 21st Century. Steve is a fellow of both the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries and has his CFA designation. back to top

 

Andrew Branion

Andrew is a director in the Capital Markets Group at Scotia Capital. His responsibilities include providing structured derivative solutions to Canadian Institutional Investors. Horace “Woody” Brock

Holder of five academic degrees, Dr. Horace “Woody ” Brock earned his B.A., M.B.A., and M.S. from Harvard University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University (mathematical economics and political philosophy). He was elected an Andrew Mellon Foundation Bicentennial Fellow in 1976. Dr. Brock studied under Kenneth J. Arrow, Professor of Economics, and John C. Harsanyi, Professor of Economics, University of California, Berkeley, both winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics. Dr. Brock founded SED in 1985, and in doing so was sponsored by Fidelity Corp, GE Capital, IBM Pension Fund and twenty other institutions looking for a much deeper level of analysis of interest rates and the economy. back to top

 

Andrew Campbell

Andrew is chief executive officer of Nunavut Trust, as well as a board member and the treasurer of Tradex Management Inc. and the Tradex Equity Fund. Previously, he was the manager of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Pension Fund and held various senior planning and financial positions at CMHC. He has an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, where he specialized in finance and institutional investment management. back to top

Jamie Colliver

Jamie is responsible for institutional marketing and business development for Putnam Investments in Canada. Jamie has over thirty years experience in the financial services industry. His previous experience included president and head of Sales and Distribution for a Canadian mutual fund company and prior to that managing director and Global Head of Fixed Income Sales and Marketing for Scotia Capital Markets in Toronto. Jamie has an Investment Counsellor/Portfolio Management registration as well as numerous other industry designations. Stephen Cotsman

Stephen has held the position of managing director and chief executive officer, CBC Pension Plan since 1995. Prior to managing the Pension Plan, Stephen was vice-president, Finance and Administration (chief financial officer) of the CBC for nine years. Previous employment included seven years at the Federal Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and five years at Public Works Canada. Jim Davis

Jim is vice- president in Dimensional’s research group. Jim has done substantial research into the sources of risk and return, including writing an important historical study with Eugene F. Fama and Kenneth R. French, "Characteristics, Covariances, and Average Returns: 1929 to 1997," Journal of Finance (2000). This influential study extended the Fama/French value database back to the 1920s, solidifying Dimensional’s knowledge and analysis of risk factors and returns. Jim holds a doctorate of philosophy from the University of Illinois, a master’s degree of business administration from DePaul University and a degree in finance from Oklahoma State University. back to top

• Anca Drexler

Anca is a managing director of Investment Operations, Research and Risk at OPTrust, one of Canada’s largest public pension plans. Her responsibilities include recommending an asset mix and researching new investment ideas or strategies with the goal of improving the Fund’s risk/return profile or the efficiency of the management of the Fund’s assets as well as measuring, monitoring and managing the investment risk in the Fund based on targeted risk levels approved by the Fund’s Board of Trustees. Anca has a master’s degree in quantitative finance and statistics from the University of Waterloo and also holds the CFA designation. back to top

Paul is a managing partner and fixed income portfolio manager at Aurion Capital. He currently manages the real return bond portion of the Shell Canada pension fund, and is involved in strategic asset allocation of the funds assets. He has been an active participant on boards and committees of the Toronto CFA Society, the CFA Institute, and is Aurion’s representative to the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance. back to top

 

Dan Foster

As the pension fund manager for the United Church of Canada, Dan is the primary interface between the external investment managers and custodians, the investment committee and the United Church. Dan is a chartered accountant with 25 years experience in public accounting prior to coming to the United Church Pension Plan. He is currently a member of PIAC and was a panelist on the topic of active versus passive institutional investing at the 2003 Canada Cup of Indexing in Montreal. Mihail Garchev

Mihail is an analyst, Public Markets at the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (“PSP Investments”). Mihail took part in the recent review of the policy portfolio and provided research on asset classes and liabilities profiles of the plans under management. Prior to PSP, Mihail worked for an Eastern European financial institution which was managing assets for several local pension funds and insurance companies. PSPIB is a crown corporation established by Parliament by the Public Sector Pension Investment Board Act, which manages employer and employee contributions made after April 1, 2000 to the federal Public Service, the Canadian Forces and the RCMP pension funds. back to top

 

Mathieu Goulet

Mathieu is a financial analyst with the Laval University Pension Fund where he has worked for the past five years. His responsibilities include manager selection and monitoring as well as performance analysis and research. Prior to that, he was a derivatives trader for the ministry of Finance of Quebec. Jennifer Grabmann

Jennifer is an investment research officer with the Nova Scotia Pension Agency. She is one of two research officers working in the Investment Strategies Area. Her responsibilities include recommendations on investments and asset mixes that possess the appropriate risk/return profiles for the Funds; portflio optimization; manager research and selection; and is currently involved in the creation and implemention of the Agency's risk management framework. Jennifer has a bachelor of science degree in Economics and a master’s degree of business administration in Finance from Dalhouse University. Bruce is the managing director, pension assets for Scotiabank. Sterling is a senior finance and risk management professional with over 12 years of experience in capital, credit and energy markets. Prior to joining the CPP Investment Board, Sterling was a manager at Ontario Power Generation and prior to that spent nine years with CIBC. A regional director for DFA Canada’s institutional client services, Peter provides investment services and consulting to public and private pension plans as well as larger foundations and endowments. Peter joins Dimensional following nine years as a senior investment and business development consultant for Towers Perrin and two years in a similar role with COMSTAT Capital Sciences. A CFA Charterholder, Peter earned a master’s degree in business administration in finance and investments from York University in 1993 and a bachelor’s degree in management economics from the University of Guelph in 1985. back to top

Paul is a professor of finance and the Toronto Stock Exchange chair in capital markets at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. He is chair of the advisory board of Canadian Investment Review and the associate director of the Capital Markets Institute at the University of Toronto. He received his doctorate in finance from the University of Chicago and has published research and applied papers for both academic and practitioner journals. Melissa joined Rogers Media in 2002 as conference co-ordinator and has recently been appointed to conference planner. Jim Hoult

Jim is the senior financial analyst in Stelco Inc.’s law and pension investments department. His responsibilities related to Stelco’s many defined benefit pension plans include developing plan structure encompassing investment policy, asset allocation and portfolio manager decisions, as well as overall plan monitoring of manager and total fund performance, compliance and governance. Nikki joined Aliant in 2001 and since that time has worked primarily in the pension area dealing with matters related to investment policy, funding and accounting. Nikki is currently a senior financial analyst and holds both CA and CFA designations. back to top

 

Henry Kim

Henry is the director of Investment Finance at Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. He is responsible for building and maintaining the infrastructure supporting the trading operations, establishing and maintaining controls and safeguards for the assets, measuring and analyzing risk and performance for the fund. Prior to joining the CPP Investment Board, Henry was at OMERS and previous to that was with the Assurance and Advisory Services group of Deloitte and Touche. Mark Kritzman

Mark is managing partner of Windham Capital Management Boston, LLC and a senior partner of State Street Associates. He is the research director of AIMR’s Research Foundation and a director of the Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance and the International Securities Exchange. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Financial Analysts Journal, the Journal of Alternative Investments and the Journal of Derivatives. In 1993 he received a Graham and Dodd Award in recognition of an outstanding feature article in the Financial Analysts Journal, and in 1997 he received the Inquire Europe 1997 first prize for his research. back to top

 

Claire Kyle

Claire is senior manager of the Bank of Montreal's pension fund. Prior to her current position, she worked in both the United States and Canada in a variety of fields, including private equity investments, mergers and acquisitions, corporate advisory, economics and strategy, and pension fund management. Ted Leonard

Ted is the director of finance at the IESO and is responsible for all financial aspects of the corporation, including many fiduciary responsibilities for the pension plan, accounting and reporting, treasury, procurement, taxation and planning and forecasting. As well, Ted oversees the cash management, credit monitoring and invoicing aspects of the wholesale electricity market in Ontario. Ted is a member of the IESO’s Pension Management Committee – the management committee that oversees the IESO’s defined benefit plan. David Linds

David is senior vice president, business development and client relationship management at CIBC Mellon. He is a member of the company’s executive committee and through the development, communication and execution of strategic business plans he manages CIBC Mellon’s business development, national marketing activities and client relations for the pension trust and custody services industry. David maintains an active role in many industry associations. He has over 27 years financial services experience, including 19 years with CIBC World Markets and CIBC Mellon. back to top

 

David Long

David Long is portfolio manager, derivatives at Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) in Toronto. David has been at HOOPP for three years. He develops and executes relative value strategies in structured and single-name credit, fixed income and equity derivatives. He is also involved in the creation and implementation of HOOPP’s risk management system. Prior to joining HOOPP, David traded vanilla and exotic fixed income options at a Canadian dealer. David holds a PhD in Statistics and is a CFA Charterholder.
