Zainul Ali
Zainul is a senior asset consultant with Towers Perrin. Prior to this position, he held the job of vice-president, strategic research and risk management at OMERS and before that, treasurer for a large public sector organization. Andrew Ang
Andrew is associate professor of finance at Columbia Business School. He specializes in empirical asset pricing and applications of econometrics to financial problems. Andrew’s work focuses on macro modeling of the term structure, asset allocation, and the predictability of stock returns. He is an associate editor of the Review of Financial Studies, a faculty research fellow of the National Bureau of Economic Research and is the recipient of several grants, including grants from the National Science Foundation, Q-Group, INQUIRE-Europe and INQUIRE-UK. back to top

Don Bisch

Don is editor of Benefit Canada and provides overall editorial direction on Benefits CanadaCanadian Healthcare Manager and Gestion Santé magazines. Don joined the Rogers Publishing Healthcare and Financial Services Group in April 2000 and has led the editorial team at Canadian Healthcare Manager magazine for the past four years. He holds a master’s of journalism degree from Carleton University and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Waterloo. back to top  

 

Dexton Blackstock
Dexton is vice-president and director of State Street Global Markets Canada Inc. In addition to his responsibilities for the marketing and sales of transition management services to both fund sponsors and investment consultants, he is also involved in investment portfolio analysis and management of the brokerage's daily trading activities. Prior to joining State Street, Dexton was part of the institutional fixed income sales and trading team at a major broker/dealer; before that, he managed the fixed income department at CT Securities' discount brokerage. Dexton holds a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Calgary and is a CFA. back to top

Alex Bodnarchuk

Steve Bonnar
Steve is a principal in the
Toronto office of Towers Perrin. He has an extensive background in actuarial and employee benefit consulting, having assisted a wide variety of employers in the design, administration, communication, financing and investment of their pension plans. In his role, he manages large client relationships, has responsibilities for retirement financial management in Canada, and is a frequent speaker on pension financing issues. Most recently he has co-authored Towers Perrin’s White Paper on how to rejuvenate Canada’s pension system to accommodate the realities of the 21st Century. Steve is a fellow of both the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries. He also has his CFA designation. back to top

Andrew Branion

Andrew is a Director in the Capital Markets Group at Scotia Capital. His responsibilities include providing structured derivative solutions to Canadian Institutional Investors. Andrew joined Scotia Capital in 1997, after having worked at the Bank of Canada, and has a MBA (finance) from the University of Toronto. back to top

 

Mike Brooks

Mike graduated with a bachelor of science in actuarial mathematics and statistics from Heriot-Watt University in 1991. He joined Baillie Gifford in 2000 and is head of investment risk. Prior to that, he was head of quantitative research at Aegon Asset Management. Mike is a fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries and chaired the U.K. actuarial profession’s working party on investment risk for three years. back to top

 

Rajan Burney

Rajan is director, institutional investments at Fidelity Investments Canada. In this role, he is responsible for the implementation and servicing of defined benefit clients in Canada.  Prior to joining Fidelity in 1999 as senior fund analyst, Rajan was an analyst with SEI Investments’ asset consulting practice in Toronto. In this role, he was responsible for the performance and analysis of pension, endowment, and foundation assets of plan sponsors and portfolios managed by primarily institutional investment managers. Rajan earned his bachelor of commerce in finance and international business and his MBA from McGill University. He has nine years experience in the investment management industry. back to top

 

Duncan Burrill

Duncan recently joined the CBC Pension Fund as the senior manager, risk management.  Prior to this, he was involved in financial and asset management at the Canadian Red Cross Society. Originally from Australia, Duncan holds both an accounting designation and an MBA. back to top

 

Michael Butera

Michael is general manager, external portfolios and risk management for the pension investment division at Canada Post Corporation. His responsibilities include investment policy, manager structure and risk management. Prior to joining Canada Post, Michael was an asset management consultant for over 13 years. John Chase

John is a vice-president and member of the institutional marketing team at Lazard Asset Management LLC. He has been working in the investment field since 1992; before joining Lazard in 1997, John was a turnaround management consultant and an advisor to governments in Eastern Europe and Central Asia regarding enterprise redevelopment, privatization and anti-monopoly. He speaks Russian and received an MPA in international economics from Columbia University, an MBA in entrepreneurship from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a BA from Saint Anselm College. back to top  

 

• William Daley

Bill is a director of Lazard Asset Management LLC and is based in the firm's main office in New York. He is responsible for Lazard's institutional clients in Canada, South Africa and for select clients in the United States. He has over 20 years of experience in the investment business. Bill received a BSFS from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, an MBA from New York University's Graduate School of Business Administration, and has received the CFA charter. back to top

 

Leo de Bever

Leo is executive vice-president, global investment management, responsible for building MFC Global’s asset management business both in Canada and abroad. He is also responsible for the management of MFC Global’s North American equity and alternative asset investments including structured debt products, real estate, oil and gas, and timber and agriculture. He joined MFC Global in 2004, with almost 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. Before joining MFC Global, Leo was senior vice-president, research and economics for the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. Leo’s educational background includes a BA in economics from the University of Oregon, and both an MA and a PhD in economics from the University of Wisconsin. back to top

 

Réal Desrochers

Réal Desrochers is Director of Alternative Investments for the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS), the third largest public pension fund in the United States.  The portfolio invests in a variety of private equity partnerships including buyout, venture capital and distressed debt funds throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Prior to joining CalSTRS, Mr. Desrochers managed the international private equity portfolio for CDP Capital, Canada’s largest pension fund.  He is active on the boards and advisory committees of a number of the world’s largest private equity and leading Venture Capital firms. Mr. Desrochers holds an MBA and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Laval University.  He obtained a degree in food technology from St. Hyacinthe Institute of Agricultural Technology in Canada.  He has attended executive courses at INSEAD, Wharton University and California University. Mr. Desrochers is a member of the CFA Institute and is a member of the California Nano Systems Institute (CNSI) Venture Capital Advisory Board. back to top
