Robert F. Adams has been senior manager of the Bank of Montreal's pension fund for seven years. Previously, he managed the bank's investor relations program. His career also includes European cash management and internal auditing for major oil companies as well as senior lecturer at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He has both his MBA and CMA.
Helen Bain is vice-president of pension investments for Air Canada's pension funds. She directs the management and deployment of approximately $8.5 billion of assets that now include those of the former Canadian Airlines. Her responsibilities include the design of specialized manager structures, the identification and selection of assets, markets, management style and investment managers to use in those structures. She is also a Trustee of the airline's United Kingdom pension fund.
Lori Bak is the publisher of the Canadian Investment Review. She has worked at Rogers Media as a business journalist and editor for 14 years, most recently as editorial director of Rogers' financial publications. Ms. Bak is an active member of the Canadian Pension and Benefits Institute (CPBI) and the Association of Canadian Pension Management (ACPM).
Alain Belanger is associate director for Capital Markets Group at Scotia Capital. He is part of the Credit Derivative Trading Desk, where his main responsibilities involve modelling, structuring, pricing and hedging credit derivative transactions. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from Kent State University and a M.Sc. in Computational Finance from Carnegie Mellon University.
Malcolm Benn is lead portfolio manager, vice-president & managing director for North American Fixed Income at Elliott & Page Limited. He directs the overall investment management activity of the combined Canadian and U.S. Fixed Income Department, with assets in excess of $36 billion Canadian. Mr. Benn has more than 27 years of investment management experience with fixed income portfolios. Over the past 18 years, he has specialized in immunized and indexed portfolios, as well as totally discretionary portfolios in Canada for Manulife and group pension clients. Prior to joining Manulife, Mr. Benn's investment experience included 13 years with Dominion Life Assurance, managing investments in both Canada and the U.S. He is registered with the Ontario Securities Commission as an investment advisor.
Caroline Cakebread is the editor of the Canadian Investment Review. She joined Rogers Media in May 2001. From 1998 to 2001, she was manager of Investor Education at the Toronto Stock Exchange. She holds an MA and a PhD in English from the University of Birmingham and a BA from the University of Toronto.
Chris Caswell is responsible for administering VIA Rail Canada's pension fund, and also manages the corporation's financial assets. He also directs the risk management activities of the corporation. Chris has also held various financial management positions in planning and budgeting, business analysis and project evaluation, accounting, product costing and treasury operations. He has his CFA.
Louise Charette is currently manager of Administration of Assets for the Alcan Pension Funds. In this capacity, Ms. Charette oversees investment administration for Canadian and American plans, and acts as consultant for other plans of Alcan in the U.K. and Switzerland. Her tasks include reviewing legal documentation, writing investment policies and guidelines, selecting and monitoring investment managers and liaising with committees. With assets of close to $4 billion, the Canadian plans capture most of Ms. Charette's attention. The complex structure of specialized managers requires frequent adjustments, including the hiring of investment managers.
Lynn A. Clark is the vice-president of economic policy and strategic research at the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board (OMERS). She is responsible for all aspects of investment policy, including risk management, corporate governance, performance evaluation reports, asset allocation policy reviews, and economic and strategic research associated with investment policy decision-making. Ms. Clark holds an honours bachelor degree from Queen's University and a masters degree in economics from York University.
Chris Cockburn is managing director at Russell/Mellon Analytical Services in Canada. Chris is responsible for all aspects of the Canadian office, including product development, operations, client service and business development. Mr. Cockburn holds an honours degree in business from Wilfrid Laurier University, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). He is a member of the Global Association of Risk Management Professionals and the Association of Investment Management and Research.
James Colliver is senior vice-president of Integra Global Advisors and heads this division of Integra Capital Management. Mr. Colliver has over 25 years experience in the financial services industry. Prior to joining Integra, he was a founding partner, president and head of sales and distribution for a Canadian mutual fund company. Prior to that, he acted as managing director and global head of Fixed Income Sales and Marketing for Scotia Capital Markets in Toronto. He has strong institutional relationships with pension funds, governments and financial organization in Canada and abroad. Mr. Colliver holds a Bachelor of Arts degree form the University of Western Ontario and numerous industry designations.
Jean-François Courville is managing director of Global Markets for State Street Bank and Trust Company. Mr. Courville manages the Global Markets division of State Street in Canada and is Principal Officer of State Street Bank and Trust Company. He is also a director of State Street Associates. Based in Toronto, he is responsible for the financial intermediation and e-finance activities in Canada, including foreign exchange trading and sales, money-market trading, balance sheet management, as well as currency advisory and management services and the Global Link e-finance activities. He joined State Street in 1996 to establish a new currency sales and risk management operation in Montreal. He subsequently moved to Toronto in 2000 to assume the general management of Canadian Global Markets operations. Since 1991, he has held positions as money market, currency and currency derivative trader, and currency strategist with a major Canadian bank in Montreal and in London, England. Mr. Courville holds a B.Com in Finance and International Business from McGill University in Montreal and has a CFA designation.
Oswald D'Mello oversees Nortel Networks' pension fund assets on a global basis and manages a fixed income portfolio for the Canadian pension Fund. He has held various senior positions in Nortel Networks prior to being appointed director of Pension Funds. Prior to his current position, he was a trust officer with Montreal Trust Company.
Darren A. Dansereau is an analyst with the Portfolio Analysis and Research area within the Investment Management Division of Alberta Revenue. He joined the Alberta government after working with TD Canada Trust. He holds a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Alberta specializing in finance. He holds the Canadian Investment Management and Certified Financial Planner designation and is a Level III candidate in the CFA program. He is a member of the Edmonton Society of Financial Analysts.
Harindra de Silva is president and a member of the Board of Directors of Analytic Investors, a specialist, quantitative investment management firm that is a partner on the Integra Global Advisors platform. He is responsible for the firm's strategic direction and the ongoing development of its investment processes. As the senior member of the firm's investment team, Mr. de Silva also serves as co-manager (of the Analytic Core U.S. Equity Fund) and as co-manager of the Analytic Defensive Equity Fund and institutional separate accounts. Mr. de Silva has authored several articles and studies on finance related topics, including stock market anomalies, market volatility and asset valuation. He received a PhD in Finance from the University of California, Irvine. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, an MBA in Finance and a MS in Economic Forecasting from the University of Rochester, and is a designated CFA.
John Ellis is vice president, marketing, at YMG. He joined YMG in June of 1997 and is directly involved in new client business. Prior to joining the firm, he was Vice President, Finance, and Treasurer of Kruger Inc. with overall responsibility for the company's investing and financing activities. Previously, John was the managing director of Royal Trust's Caribbean operations, providing a wide array of investment management services to Canadian and international corporations
Mario Galizia is a Principal and Actuary in the Toronto office of Towers Perrin with over 20 years experience in the pension field. He specializes in the design of retirement programs and assisting plan sponsors in establishing appropriate funding, expensing and investment policies. He also has significant experience in supplemental retirement arrangements, mergers and acquisitions involving pension plans, designing early retirement programs and issues related to international transfers. Mr. Galizia obtained a bachelor of science in Actuarial Science from the University of Toronto, and is a Fellow of both the Society of Actuaries and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. He has his FSA and FCIA.
Harry Gibbs joined the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board as vice-president of Investments in 1997, bringing his extensive experience in all aspects of pension fund investment management to the direction of the Board's multi-billion dollar investment assets. This followed a one-tear stint as a senior consultant in the Asset Consulting Group of Towers Perrin in Toronto. Mr. Gibbs became part of the Towers Perrin team and moved to Toronto from Montreal in October of 1996, upon his retirement from Air Canada following a successful 28-year career, latterly as president of the airline's Pension Investment Division.
Dan Goguen is the vice-president of Finance and Administration with the New Brunswick Investment Management Corporation. He has served in that capacity with the Corporation since it began operations in 1996. Prior to joining the Corporation, Mr. Goguen worked with the Office of the Auditor General in New Brunswick. He received his CA designation in 1992.
Emilian Groch joined the Alberta Teachers' Retirement Fund Board (ATRF) in 1994 as executive director. He is responsible for the operation and management of ATRF. ATRF provides retirement benefits, information services and asset management for 58,000 Alberta teachers and pensioners. Total assets of the pension plan exceed $2.3 billion. He was the Alberta Superintendent of Pensions from 1984 to 1994, and has worked in the pension industry for almost 25 years. Emilian has a B.Sc. Honours (Applied Mathematics in Statistics) and a Certificate of Employee Benefits Administration from the University of Alberta. He is a member of The City of Edmonton Investment Committee and a member of the Government Relations Committee of the Pension Investment Association of Canada. Mr. Groch is a frequent speaker on pension industry issues.
Peter Hadden graduated with an honours BA in Business Organization from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh in 1979. He has 18 years investment experience, predominantly managing European and International equity portfolios. He joined Baillie Gifford in 2001 as a client service director in the Institutional Clients Department.
Paul Halpern is the Toronto Stock Exchange professor of finance at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. He is chair of the advisory board of the Canadian Investment Review and the director of the Capital Markets Institute at the University of Toronto. He received his PhD in finance from the University of Chicago and has published research and applied papers for both academic and practitioner journals.
Jim Hoult is the senior financial analyst in the Law and Pension Investments Department of Stelco Inc. He joined Stelco in February 1979. He has over 20 years experience working in the corporate offices (10 years in the tax, 5 years in corporate accounting and the last 5 years in the executive suite). He accepted his new position in May 2001. Mr. Hoult obtained a bachelor of commerce (Accountancy) at Concordia University.
David Howarth is manager of capital markets analysis at Canadian Pacific Investment Management. He directs the annual review of the policy asset mix, manages the non-immunized bond portfolio and provides quantitative support for the management of the immunized bond portfolio. Mr. Howarth also develops quantitative models to assist in the management of various portfolios and advises on the use of derivative products, non-traditional asset classes and risk management for the CPR pension fund. He has a bachelor of math from the University of Waterloo and is a CFA.
Don Hurley joined Inco's Ray-O-Vac Corporation subsidiary as assistant treasurer in 1979 and became treasurer in 1981. In 1982, he transferred to Inco Limited's treasury group in New York as assistant treasurer of Treasury Operations, in charge of cash and debt management, bank relations, commodities and foreign exchange trading and international finance. In 1998, Mr. Hurley was appointed vice-president and treasurer of Inco Limited, located in Toronto.
Adrian Hussey is vice-president of Capital Markets, Manulife Financial. Mr. Hussey is responsible for index fund management, new product development and risk management. Asset allocation has been a focal point of new product development activities. Before joining Manulife in1997, Mr. Hussey directed risk management projects at Ontario Hydro, most recently as director, Venture Development - Energy Trading. Earlier, he managed the launching of Hydro's corporate-wide risk management program as manager, Corporate Risk Management. He also worked as a financial engineer and then product manager for Algorithmics Inc., a Toronto-based software firm that develops and markets risk management software worldwide.
Peter S. Jarvis is a vice-president with the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board (OMERS), and is responsible for the management of all fixed income programs, cash management, and the development of OMERS' approach to Alternative Assets. He is also a part of the management team responsible for financial management of the total fund. Prior to OMERS, Mr. Jarvis was vice-president of fixed income at TAL, vice-president and director in charge of trading at Scotia McLeod in London, England and a vice-president in various roles at Nesbitt Thomson. A CFA and past president of the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts, he graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA in economics. He is also a fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI).
Michael Keenan is the director of policy and research for Bimcor Inc, a Canadian pension investment manager. Prior to joining Bimcor in January 2001, Mr. Keenan spent 10 years at the federal Department of Finance, principally in the Financial Markets Division.
Eric Kirzner is a professor of finance at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. He is currently a director and chair of the audit committee of Deutsche Bank (Canada), an independent advisor to CIBC Securities Inc.'s investment committee, a director of the Canadian Derivatives Clearing Corporation, a member of the Toronto Stock Exchange's regulation committee, and vice-chair of the Investment Dealer's Association equity trading committee. He writes a regular column in the National Post on passive investing and benchmarking and is the co-developer (with Richard Croft) of the National Post's FPX Indexes.

Luc Lapointe joined YMG's Montreal office in early 2000 as a portfolio manager. He is part of YMG's tactical asset allocation management team and is working primarily in the fields of portfolio implementation and product research. He is also responsible for marketing and servicing clients in the province of Quebec. From 1994 to March 2000, Mr. Lapointe was working at Montrusco Associates Inc. (now Montrusco Bolton Inc.) as a strategist. In that role, he was responsible for implementing quantitative financial models and for developing Canadian and International asset mix models as part of specialized fund management. As an economist and market strategist, Mr. Lapointe was also primarily responsible for analyzing the world economy and establishing economic forecasts.
Laurie M. Lawson is managing director of Asset Allocation and Special Asset Classes for the University of Toronto Asset Management Corporation (UTAM). UTAM is a separately incorporated subsidiary of the University of Toronto, formed in mid-2000 to manage the university's over $4 billion in pension, endowment and operating assets. Ms. Lawson's responsibilities include running the three major funds' $1.3 billion fixed income components. She also manages the funds' asset allocations, capital flows, currency exposures and contributes to the hedge fund programs. Ms. Lawson holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a B.Com. graduate of McGill University.
Tristram S. Lett is vice-president of Quantitative Investment Products at YMG. He has been involved with the development of quantitative investment strategies through most of his career, beginning at the Ontario Treasury where he was responsible for policy development of the CPP for the Province. Subsequently, he spent 5 years providing investment consulting advice at which time the firm became registered as an investment counsellor. The firm pioneered a number of derivative-based strategies for pension funds in Canada. During this time, Mr. Lett was chairman of the Board of Governors of the Toronto Futures Exchange. He was also a member of the TSE's Index Committee.
Françoys Levert is vice-president of FX Sales at State Street. He joined State Street in 1996 to establish the currency trading and risk management activities in Montreal. He currently manages State Street's Global Trading and Research activities in Montreal, where he specializes in currency risk management. Prior to his employment with State Street, he was a Corporate Banking Analyst with Credit Lyonnais in Montreal. Mr. Levert is a Chartered Financial Analyst and holds a Masters degree in Finance (M.Sc.) from École des HEC in Montreal.
David S. Linds is senior vice-president of sales and marketing at CIBC Mellon. He is a member of the company's executive committee and through the development, communication and execution of strategic business plans, he manages CIBC Mellon's business development and national marketing activities for the pension trust and custody services industry. Mr. Linds maintains an active role in many industry associations. He has over 20 years financial services experience, including 12 years with CIBC World Markets and CIBC Mellon.
Michel Lizée is the president of the Investment Committee of the Pension Plan of the Université du Québec and, since 1982, a trustee of the Pension Board designated by the employees of the Université du Québec in Montreal.
Richard MacDonald is manager of Pension Fund Administration for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Pension Fund. He completed six years of various responsibilities in the Finance and Management area within CMHC before joining the Pension Fund in 1986. He is responsible for the accounting, administration, actuarial and reporting aspects of pension fund operations for the CMHC Pension Plan. He is a member of the Pension Plan Co-ordination Committee, which monitors relevant legislation to ensure compliance of the CMHC Pension Plan Rules and to address specific issues that may arise over the course of the administration of the Pension Plan. Most recently, this Committee co-ordinated a Governance Review of the Pension Plan, focusing on the governance structure and on best practice principles identified for pension plans. Richard is a Chartered Accountant and member of the Order of Chartered Accountants of Quebec.
Claude Macorin is portfolio manager at McGill University, Department of Pension Management, where among his responsibilities he is directly responsible for managing a Canadian equity portfolio, and real estate and venture capital investments. In his duties as Portfolio Manager, Mr. Macorin acts as the University representative on various committees and boards. Prior to joining McGill University, Mr. Macorin was manager & senior financial analyst at Canadian Bond Rating Service. Mr. Macorin was a member of the CBRS management committee as well as the CBRS rating committee, which formalizes credit rating decisions.
Richard McAloney is the CEO of the Nova Scotia Association of Health Organizations Pension Plan. Previously he was responsible for all investment, pension benefit, and treasury operations for the Province of Nova Scotia. He is also currently a director of the Pension Investment Association of Canada (PIAC), a director of the Association of Canadian Pension Management (ACPM); a member of PIAC's Committee to address Ad Hoc Industry Issues; a member of the Industry Group which advises CAPSA's Investment Policy Committee; and a member of several advisory boards for investment vehicles. Richard is also a past director of several boards, and was a founding director of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), and Chartered Accountant (CA) designations.
Shawn Menard has been a director of business development at Russell/Mellon Analytical Services for the last five years, and is responsible for client service, marketing and sales. Mr. Menard works with plan sponsors and money managers to help them understand the structural characteristics of their portfolios by providing them with risk management services and investment manager analysis. He completed his bachelor's degrees, one in Economics and another in Management studies, at the University Guelph. He also lectures at the University of Guelph about portfolio management issues, including risk management and performance measurement theory. He is a CFA and a member of the Global Association of Risk Management Professionals and the Association of Investment Management and Research.
Catherine Mitchell is account manager for Canadian Investment Review, Benefits Canada, Avantages and the Canadian Pension Fund Directories. With Rogers for over a year, Ms. Mitchell has more than 15 years of experience in the financial services sector. She is a graduate of York University.
Bill Pacula graduated with a BA in philosophy from Washington College in 1972 and has 25 years experience working with pension and other tax-exempt fund sponsors in North America. He joined the Institutional Clients Department of Baillie Gifford in 2001 and is part of the firm's business development team, based in New York.
Richard Parrish is currently manager of Measurement Services at the British Columbia Investment Management Corporation. Mr. Parrish joined the Corporation in 1987. He has worked in the Policy and Research Department as an Analyst and as the manager of Investment Policy.
Tom Phelps is vice-president and chief economist at Noranda Inc. He has been responsible for the $1 billion pension fund for the past 11 years. He is a 31- year veteran at Noranda with experience in a wide variety of treasury roles.
Steve Philp is director of Capital Markets Group at Scotia Capital. He has been associated with the alternative asset industry for the last seven years and has a wide range of contacts within alternative asset management, consulting and accounting firms. He currently heads up the relationship group within Scotia Capital that is responsible for Alternative Asset Managers, including Hedge Funds and Commodity Trading Advisors. In this capacity, he is responsible for credit assessments, fund due diligence and manager research.
Graham S. Rennie is the founder of Integra Capital Management and is president & managing partner. As CEO, Mr. Rennie oversees Integra's pooled fund business, wealth management business and Integra Global Advisors. He is active in client account management, and responsible for the strategic direction of the firm. He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and holds a MBA from McMaster University. Mr. Rennie began his investment career with Prudential Assurance and then joined Manuvest as vice-president. Later, he started and operated the Toronto office of Dixon Krogseth Investment Counsel, a Vancouver-based investment firm. Prior to forming Integra Capital Management, he was senior vice-president of Trafalgar Capital Management, an investment counsel firm based in Oakville.
Bill Rentz is the chairman of the Pension Plan Committee of the Board of Governors of the University of Ottawa. He is also an associate professor of Finance in the Faculty of Administration at the University of Ottawa. He is co-author of Canadian Financial Management with Gene Brigham, Al Kahl and Lou Gapenski, and has been published in many different journals. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an AM and PhD in Economics from the University of Rochester.

David Service is Principal in the Toronto office of Towers Perrin, specializing in asset management consultation. He assists clients in a variety of aspects of asset management, including asset allocation and financial management, pension governance reviews, manager structure analysis, selection of investment managers and monitoring of manager performance. Mr. Service is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries
Jim Stothers is president and chief investment officer of the Ontario Electricity Pension Services Corporation, which is responsible for investment and benefits administration of the pension plans of the four successor companies to Ontario Hydro. Previously, he held a variety of investment research and portfolio management positions at Ontario Hydro, serving as director of pension fund from 1993 to 1999.
Shams Talib is a senior consultant and Towers Perrin's Canadian Practice Leader for Retirement Financial Management. In this capacity, he is focusing on setting the firm's strategic direction in advising clients on managing the financial risks of their pension plans. In addition to his Practice Leader responsibilities, he also advises clients on all aspects relating to the design, financing, communication & administration of retirement programs, including mergers and acquisitions and executive retirement arrangements. Mr. Talib obtained a bachelor of mathematics (Dean's Honours List) in actuarial science from the University of Waterloo, and is a Fellow of both the Society of Actuaries and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. He has his FSA, FCIA and CFA.
Patrick Tardif has led the process by which Canada Post Corporation exited the Public Service Superannuation Act (PSSA) and established its own Pension Plan. This included the negotiation of the Transfer Value, the establishment of administrative and custodian services, gathering and validation of data and communications. He is now general manager of Pension Plan and Human Resource Financial Support at Canada Post. As the general manager of the Pension Plan, he is responsible for administration, policy, communications, systems, data, finance and actuarial valuations. As the HR Financial Support, he is also heavily involved in the financial management of all other benefits plans at Canada Post.
Terri Troy is manager of pension investments for the Royal Bank and Royal Trust pension plans. Mr. Troy's responsibilities include asset mix decisions, investment manager structures and manager monitoring, performance measurement and attribution, risk analytics, compliance monitoring, governance and the implementation of a defined contribution pension plan.
Mike Walsh joined Elliott & Page in 1998 as vice-president for Institutional Investments. Mr. Walsh has over 20 years of diverse portfolio management experience. Throughout his career, he has focused on the investment needs of Canadian pension and endowment funds. At Elliott & Page, Mr. Walsh's mandate includes client relations, product development and quality control of all portfolio management services. Paul Williams is executive publisher of Rogers Media, Financial Publishing. He joined Rogers Media Inc. in 1989 as editor of Benefits Canada. Gigi Wong is the manager of Compliance & Special Projects at the Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan. Prior to joining HOOPP, she was with the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board and TD Securities. Ms. Wong is a chartered accountant and is currently a CFA level 3 candidate.
Michael Zych is managing director of Capital Markets Group at Scotia Capital. He is responsible for a team of individuals focused on providing derivative product solutions to investor accounts. He has a bachelor of commerce degree from McMaster University, a masters of business administration from the University of Toronto, and is a chartered financial analyst.
