Rick Abbott
Rick is director of investments for the City of
Winnipeg where he oversees management of the Civic Employees' Pension Plan, the Winnipeg Police Pension Plan and other assets, totaling more than $3.9 billion. He is the past chair of the Pension Investment Association of Canada (PIAC). top

 

John Akkerman
John is a senior vice-president at AllianceBernstein. In this role he is responsible for business development and client servicing activities in
Canada. Prior to this, John held various senior positions at TAL Investment Counsel, Sun Life and the Bank of Montreal. He has a degree in finance from Saint Mary’s University and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a member of the Toronto CFA Society. top

 

Robert Baillie

As vice-president, sales and relationship management at RBC Global Services, Rob is responsible for the growth and development of custody and related services, as well as relationship management of RBC's strategic clients throughout Canada. Before taking on the responsibility for national sales and relationship management, Robert was responsible for the Ontario region. Prior to joining RBC Global Services in 1994, he held various senior positions in sales and sales management in the information technology industry. Howard Balloch

Howard is president and founder of The Balloch Group, and served as Canada's ambassador to China for more than five years at the end of this 25-year career in government. As ambassador to China, he oversaw expansion in the bilateral relationship between Canada and China, and was instrumental in establishing a series of initiatives to improve Canada's profile in China, including three prime ministerial and Team Canada delegations. Howard serves on a number of corporate boards, and is adjunct professor of international business at the University of British Columbia. He received BA and MA degrees from McGill University, and continued his graduate studies at the University of Toronto and the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques in Paris. top

 

Dexton Blackstock
Dexton is vice-president and director of State Street Global Markets Canada Inc. In addition to his responsibilities for the marketing and sales of transition management services to both fund sponsors and investment consultants, he is also involved in investment portfolio analysis and management of the brokerage's daily trading activities. Prior to joining
State Street, Dexton was part of the institutional fixed income sales and trading team at a major broker/dealer; before that, he managed the fixed income department at CT Securities' discount brokerage. Dexton holds a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Calgary and is a CFA. top

 

Andrew Campbell

Andrew is chief executive officer of Nunavut Trust, as well as a board member and the treasurer of Tradex Management Inc. and the Tradex Equity Fund. Previously, he was the manager of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Pension Fund and held various senior planning and financial positions at CMHC. He has an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, where he specialized in finance and institutional investment management. top

 

Michael Campbell

Michael is manager, pension and employee funds for Imperial Oil Limited where he is responsible for investment strategy, plan funding and administration. Prior to joining Imperial Oil's pension group, Michael worked in the areas of corporate finance, pipeline operations, insurance, cash management, corporate acquisitions and rate regulation. He holds undergraduate and graduate business degrees from the University of Toronto. top

 

Julie Cays

Julie is vice-president, external managers at Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP). She is an active member of PIAC and sits on the investment advisory committees of two major charitable organizations. Julie holds a BA in economics from the University of Waterloo and a CFA designation. top

 

John Chase

John is a vice-president and member of the institutional marketing team at Lazard Asset Management LLC. He has been working in the investment field since 1992; before joining Lazard in 1997, John was a turnaround management consultant and an advisor to governments in Eastern Europe and Central Asia regarding enterprise redevelopment, privatization and anti-monopoly. He speaks Russian and received an MPA in international economics from Columbia University, an MBA in entrepreneurship from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a BA from Saint Anselm College. top

 

John Clarke

John is the treasurer and assistant comptroller at Syncrude Canada Ltd. With the company since 1983, he has also held the roles of manager, treasury services and manager, information management. John is currently one of two western representatives on the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants' board of directors. He has also been actively involved with the Institute of Internal Auditors and is a member of the Benefits Canada editorial advisory board. John has an MBA from the University of Alberta and is a chartered accountant. top

 

Chris Cockburn
Chris is a vice-president and relationship manager for Capital Guardian with client relations and marketing responsibilities. Prior to joining the organization in 2001, Chris spent five and a half years as managing director for Russell/Mellon Products and Services where he was responsible for relationship management, business development and operations. Previously, he spent two and a half years with State Street Trust Company, where he started as a manager of institutional fund accounting and later served as an officer in the foreign exchange department. Chris earned his BBA (honours) from
Wilfrid Laurier University and holds the CFA designation. He is based in the Toronto office.

 

Jamie Colliver
Jamie is partner at Integra Capital Management where he heads Integra Global Advisors and is responsible for institutional marketing and business development. Integra Global Advisors is a joint venture between Integra and several world-class investment management firms. With over 29 years experience in the financial services industry, Jamie was previously managing director and global head of fixed income sales and marketing for Scotia Capital Markets. He is a graduate of the
University of Western Ontario with numerous industry designations and sits on the Canadian Investment Review advisory board. top

 

Barb Curlew

Barb is manager of finance and administration for the employee benefits division of the Office of Human Resources, Province of New Brunswick. She is a Certified General Accountant responsible for the pension contributions and pension payrolls for the various pension plans sponsored by the province. Barb has been serving on two pension committees for the past nine years: one DB plan and one DC plan. top

 

William Daley

Bill is a director of Lazard Asset Management, LLC and is based in the firm's main office in New York. He is responsible for Lazard's institutional clients in Canada, South Africa and for select clients in the United States. He has over 20 years of experience in the investment business. Bill received a BSFS from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, an MBA from New York University's Graduate School of Business Administration, and has received the CFA charter. top

 

Luc de la Durantaye

Luc is first vice-president, global asset allocation at TAL Global Asset Management. With 19 years of investment experience, he leads the team responsible for asset allocation at TAL. Previously, Luc was regional vice president at RBC Private Counsel in Montreal, and held various positions of increasing responsibility in the global asset mix group at CT Investment Management Group in Toronto. He was also an investment officer and manager of investment services at Canada Trust in Montreal, and a financial analyst at Deragon Langlois Brokerage also in Montreal. Luc has a bachelors degree in international finance from École des hautes études commerciales in Montreal, and is a CFA charterholder. top

 

Martin Evans

Martin is professor of economics at Georgetown University and a research economist at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Before joining Georgetown in 1996, he held faculty positions at New York University's Stern School of Business, the London School of Economics and the University of Michigan. He was also a senior research fellow at The Bank of England from 1995-1996, and at the International Economics Section of Princeton University from 2003-2004. Professor Evans' research focuses on the microfoundations of exchange rate dynamics; a field called New Micro Exchange Rate Economics. Using the analytical tools of market microstructure, this research investigates the manner in which dispersed information is impounded into spot exchange rates through the trading process. top

 

Dave Finstad

Dave is director, external fund management at Alberta Investment Management. He leads a team that manages in excess of $12 billion across a number of external fund-of-funds products for both traditional equities and hedge funds. He is a CFA charterholder and has a master’s degree in finance from the London School of Economics. top

 

Dan Foster

As the pension fund manager for the United Church of Canada, Dan is the primary interface between the external investment managers and custodians, the investment committee and the United Church. Dan is a chartered accountant with 25 years experience in public accounting prior to coming to the United Church Pension Plan. He is currently a member of PIAC and was a panelist on the topic of active versus passive institutional investing at the 2003 Canada Cup of Indexing in Montreal. He has a BComm from the University of Toronto. top

 

Diane Fulton

Diane is the executive director, investments for the UBC Faculty Pension  Plan, where she is responsible for the investment of $900 million in assets  with 12 different external investment managers. She is a member of the  investment committee of Insurance Corporation of B.C. (ICBC) and  secretary-treasurer and member of the board of directors of PIAC. Diane has a B.Sc. in mathematics from the University of Toronto  and an MBA from York University. top

 

Lindsey Fuller

Lindsey is the chief investment officer at the Manitoba Superannuation Fund where he manages a team of nine in-house investment professionals who themselves manage more than 80% of the fund’s assets. He has held this role since 1984. Lindsey is a director at the Siam Recovery Fund and director of PIAC. He is a graduate of University of Manitoba and is a CFA. top

 

Janet Greenwood

Janet is managing partner at Aurion Capital Management Inc. with overall responsibilities for the investment solutions business, which includes pension fund management and governance of Shell Canada's DB and DC pension funds, investment program design, asset mix management, asset class research, manager research, selection and performance and risk analytics for traditional and alternative investments. Janet was formerly director, investment research for Shell Pension Fund Management and holds degrees from University of Western Ontario and Wilfrid Laurier. She is active in PIAC, Women in Capital Markets and a member of the Girl Guides of Canada investment committee. top

 

Emilian Groch
Emilian joined the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund Board (ATRF) in 1994 as executive director. ATRF provides retirement benefits, information services and asset management for 64,000
Alberta teachers, inactive teachers and pensioners. Total assets of the fund are $3 billion. He was the Alberta Superintendent of Pensions from 1984 to 1994 and has worked in the pension industry for over 25 years. He is a director of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance, chair of the Edmonton Firefighters' Supplementary Pension Plan Committee and a member of the Government Relations Committee of PIAC. Emilian is a frequent speaker on pension industry issues. top

 

Jeff Grossman

Jeff is managing director and principal officer of State Street Global Markets. He is responsible for coordinating the business development and sales efforts for State Street Global Markets in Canada. Prior to joining State Street in 1995, he worked with Fidelity Investments where he was senior vice-president responsible for sales of electronic trading and institutional clearing. Jeff received a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Colgate University and an MBA from Pace University. top

 

Laurent Halcrow
Laurent is a member of Baring Asset Management’s global equity group, responsible for the management of global equity portfolios in
Europe and the Far East. He is co-manager of the Baring Global Equity Fund and the Baring Global Growth Fund, and was key in the development of the high-alpha EAFE product for the global equity group’s U.S. client base. Laurent has also designed a number of the key portfolio construction tools used to manage the company’s range of global equity products. He has been a member of the multi-asset team since 1996, having joined Baring Asset Management in 1994. Laurent is an associate of the Society of Investment Professionals (formerly IIMR) and holds a BA (Hons) in economics from De Montfort University. top

 

Paul Halpern
Paul is a professor of finance and the Toronto Stock Exchange chair in capital markets at the Rotman School of Management,
University of Toronto. He is chair of the advisory board of Canadian Investment Review and the associate director of the Capital Markets Institute at the University of Toronto. He received his PhD in finance from the University of Chicago and has published research and applied papers for both academic and practitioner journals. He has published a corporate finance textbook, Canadian Managerial Finance, and is the editor of Financing Growth in Canada. top

 

Stanley Hamilton

Stanley is the Philip H. White Professor of Urban Land Economics and senior associate dean, Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration at the University of British Columbia. He has extensive teaching and research experience in the area of real estate analysis and valuation. His current research interests include the role of real estate in portfolios and pension governance and administration. He is presently the director of the Bureau of Asset Management at UBC and the chair of the board of trustees of the UBC Faculty Pension Plan. He is also a trustee of CREIT, a real estate investment trust and the author of several books, monographs and articles. top

 

Melissa Horwood

Melissa joined Rogers Media in 2002 as conference co-ordinator and has recently been appointed to conference planner. She brings to her position wide-ranging organizational and project management skills including a diploma in marketing communications and advertising media. Melissa currently manages eight annual conferences for Benefits Canada, Canadian Investment Review and Canadian Healthcare Manager magazines as well as additional events for the Financial Services Group. top

 

Michel Jalbert

Michel is a vice-president of business development at TAL Global Asset Management. He is the leader of TAL's institutional business development activities in Quebec. Previously at TAL, Michel was a vice-president in client servicing. Michel has 24 years’ experience in the financial services industry, is a fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and a CFA charterholder. Prior to joining TAL, Michel was director of human resources and information technology at Bell Canada International, and director of benefits and pensions at Bell Canada. He also served as an actuary at Alliance Mutual Life and as a consultant at William M. Mercer. Michel has a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science from Université Laval. top

 

Stephen Johnson

Stephen has held senior positions in investment and consulting firms prior to becoming a founding partner of Integra Capital. He holds a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Western Ontario and has had extensive experience in both fundamental and technology based investment management processes. Within Integra, Stephen oversees all aspects of client service and portfolio analysis as well as being responsible for a number of client portfolios.  top

 

Bob Kamp
Bob is director of investments for TELUS Corp. He heads a group responsible for managing a broadly diversified portfolio of investments ($2.9 billion) for some of the defined benefits plans of the TELUS group of companies. Prior to joining TELUS in 1993, he spent 20 years in investment management and research with the Alberta Treasury and the Ontario Treasury.

Dale King

Dale is associate publisher of Benefits Canada, Avantages and Canadian Investment Review. In addition, she leads the sales activities of the institutional suite of properties including Canadian Healthcare Manager and CPF Directories. Dale joined Rogers Publishing Inc. in November 2004 and prior to this, worked as national advertising sales manager at The Globe and Mail. Dale is a graduate of the executive financial management program at Ivey School of Business and graduated from the University of Western Ontario with an honours BA in Psychology. She sits on the Media Advisory Board for sales and marketing at Sheridan College. top

 

Louise Koza

Louise is director of human resources at the University of Western Ontario where she is the primary managing fiduciary of the university’s pension plans. Louise is accountable for all internal operations of the university's two defined contribution pension plans and a group RRIF program, as well as the university’s records and payroll services. She leads a team of 16 professionals and support staff in the delivery of HR strategies. Louise is a member of the Society of Actuaries, the CFA Institute, PIAC and the Human Resource Professionals Association of Ontario; she also holds the CFA and ASA designations. top

 

Claire Kyle

Claire is senior manager of the Bank of Montreal's pension fund. Prior to her current position, she worked in both the United States and Canada in a variety of fields, including private equity investments, mergers and acquisitions, corporate advisory, economics and strategy, and pension fund management. She holds the CFA designation and is a past chair of the Pension Investment Association of Canada. top

 

Richard Laflamme

Richard has been general director of University of Quebec Pension Fund since April 2005. He is graduated from Laval University and has previously worked as the director of Mouvement Desjardins Pension Fund. Richard is responsible for the whole portfolio, including both the administrative and actuarial sides, of one of the largest pension funds in Quebec ($1.65 billion). He is a member of the Association for Investment Management and Research (AIM) and PIAC, as well as the founder of the Quebec chapter of PIAC. He is also involved in the Association of Canadian Pension Management (ACPM) activities as a member and was president of Cercle Finance et Placement du Québec from 1996 to 1997. He is former chairman and member of several advisory committees acting in venture cap investment. top

 

Karee Lang

Karee is a national account manager for Canadian Investment Review and its sister publications Benefits Canada and Avantages. Her responsibilities include the management and development of marketing initiatives for the publications’ clients, including sponsorship programs, advertising, research and custom publishing programs. Karee has been with Rogers Media for over three years. top

 

Denis Larose

Denis Larose is director, investments and chief investment officer for the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology (CAAT) pension plan in Mississauga, Ontario. In this capacity, he oversees the investments of a $4-billion fund supporting the pension benefits of 25,000 active and retired members. Denis joined CAAT in April 2004, having previously spent seven years as a senior investment consultant with a large actuarial benefits and investments consulting firm. Denis graduated with a bachelor's degree in actuarial sciences from Laval University in 1983. He became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in 1986 and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries in 1987. top

 

Eric Léveillé

As client relationship officer, Eric is responsible for the Quebec region business development and client relationship activities at Barclays Global Investors Canada Limited. Prior to joining BGI, Eric was assistant vice-president with an international investment manager, responsible for business development. Eric also worked for a Canadian investment counseling firm, where he was portfolio manager, U.S. equity. Eric received his CFA charterholder designation in 1993 and is a member of the Montreal CFA Society, as well as the CFA Institute. Eric has been a board member of the Montreal CFA Society since 2001 and was president in 2004 and 2005.  Eric holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master’s degree in applied economy, both from Laval University.

 

James Lewis

James is Canadian Investment Review's managing editor. A graduate of Ryerson University's print journalism program and the Canadian Securities Course, James worked for another Rogers Media publication prior to joining CIR. Before that, he was a senior financial editor for one of Canada's largest online operations.
