> John Akkerman
John is a senior vice-president at AllianceBernstein. In this role he is responsible for business development and client servicing activities in Canada. Prior to this, John held various senior positions at T.A.L. Investment Council, Sun Life and the Bank of Montreal. He has a degree in finance from Saint Mary’s University and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario. He is a chartered financial analyst and a member of the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts. Back to top

Robert is regional vice-president and Canadian head of sales and relationship management for RBC Global Services, Institutional & Investor Services (IIS). He is responsible for the growth and development of custody and related services, as well as the relationship management of the company's strategic clients throughout Canada. Before taking on his current role, Robert was responsible for the Ontario region. Prior to joining RBC Global Services in 1994, he held various senior positions in sales and sales management. Lori is the publisher of Canadian Investment Review and associate publisher of Benefits Canada and Avantages at Rogers Media, Healthcare and Financial Publishing. She has worked at Rogers Media as a business journalist and editor for 16 years, most recently as editorial director of Rogers’ financial publications and past editor of Benefits Canada. > Ken Bancroft
Ken is director of investments for the Alberta Teachers' Retirement Fund Board. He implemented the fund's investment structure with internal and external specialist managers for Canadian, U.S. and EAFE equity mandates, plus a Canadian fixed income mandate. Previously, Ken worked at the Great-West Life Assurance Company where he provided investment counsel to pension clients and served on the executive of the Winnipeg Society of Financial Analysts. He currently serves on the investment committee at the University of Alberta and is a director of the Pension Investment Association of Canada. Back to top

> Mary Bange
Mary is an assistant professor of finance at the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business. She has been on the faculty since 1999. She previously taught at Michigan State University and the University of Oregon. Mary’s articles have been published in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Corporate Finance, Applied Economics and Quarterly Journal of Business and Economics. Her current research interests include investor behaviour, earnings management and corporate governance. Mary has a PhD from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Back to top

> Robert Boston
Robert is a director of Benchmark, a division of the Institutional and Investor Services division of RBC Global Services. Prior to joining RBC Financial Group in 1994, he was director, business development in Frank Russell’s Investment Analytical Services division. Robert is a chartered financial analyst, a member of the Association of Investment Management and Research and the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts. Robert is a frequent conference speaker and has written articles on pension finance for Canadian Investment Review and Benefits Canada. Back to top

> Arturo Bris
Professor Bris holds the Robert B. and Candice J. Haas assistant professorship in corporate finance at Yale School of Management. His research focuses on international finance and financial regulation. He has done research on the effects of exchange rate regimes on firms’ capital structure, as well as on issues regarding the regulation of financial markets. In particular, he has explored the efficacy of insider trading laws, and the optimal design of bankruptcy laws. He has also analyzed empirically the impact of short sales restrictions on the efficiency of markets around the world. Professor Bris has been published in a number of journals including the Journal of Corporate Finance and the Journal of Financial Economics. Back to top

> Andrew Campbell
Andrew is chief executive officer of Nunavut Trust, and a board member and treasurer of Tradex Management Inc. and the Tradex Equity Fund. Previously, he was the manager of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Pension Fund and held various senior planning and financial positions at CMHC. He has an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, where he specialized in finance and institutional investment management. Back to top

> Michael Campbell
Michael is manager, pension and employee funds for Imperial Oil Limited where he is responsible for investment strategy, plan funding and administration. Prior to joining Imperial Oil’s pension group, Michael worked in the areas of corporate finance, pipeline operations, insurance, cash management, corporate acquisitions and rate regulation. He holds undergraduate and graduate business degrees from the University of Toronto. Back to top

> Chris Caswell
Chris has been responsible for administering the $1.2 billion VIA Rail Canada pension fund since 1991. As director, investment and risk management, his other responsibilities include investment of the corporation's financial assets and directing corporate risk management activities. He also serves as the external member of the investment committee of another large Canadian pension fund. Chris is a CFA charterholder. Back to top

> Julie Cays
Julie has been director, external managers at Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) since September 2001. Before that she worked at CIBC for 16 years in various corporate treasury roles, most recently as director, pension investments. Julie has a BA in economics from the University of Waterloo and received her CFA designation in 1989. Julie is active in the Pension Investment Association of Canada as a member of both the corporate governance and member services committees. She is also chair of the Girl Guides of Canada’s portfolio review committee. Back to top

> Bill Chinery
Bill is responsible for business development and client relationship activities for Canada at Barclays Global Investors (BGI). Prior to joining BGI, Bill spent six years with a quantitative management firm where he was involved in product development and portfolio management of various strategies. Prior to this role, he was the national practice leader and worldwide partner with the Mercer Investment Consulting practise. Professionally, Bill is a fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and fellow of the Society of Actuaries and also is a frequent speaker and author on various pension benefit and investment issues. He holds an honours B.Math in actuarial science from the University of Waterloo. Back to top

> John Chisholm
John is executive vice-president and co-chief investment officer at Acadian Asset Management. Along with his key portfolio management role, he is responsible for the firm's quantitative valuation techniques, statistical models, and related areas. John has been extensively involved not only in the management of global equities for Acadian client portfolios, but also in the development and refinement of Acadian's stock, industry, and country selection models. He is a graduate of the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he holds the chartered financial analyst designation. Back to top

> Bruce Clarke
Bruce is managing partner and president at Arrowstreet Capital where he is responsible for managing the firm’s business affairs as well as developing and implementing Arrowstreet’s business plan. He also holds a seat on the investment committee. Previously, from 1994 to 1999, Bruce was the president and CEO of PanAgora Asset Management. John is the treasurer at Syncrude Canada Ltd., a position he has held since 1995. With the company since 1983, he has also held the roles of manager, treasury services and manager, information management. John is currently one of two western representatives on the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants board of directors. He has also been actively involved with the Institute of Internal Auditors. > Chris Cockburn
Chris is an assistant vice-president of Capital Guardian (Canada), Inc. with client relations and marketing responsibilities. Prior to joining the company in 2001, he spent five and a half years as managing director for Russell/Mellon products and services in Canada, where he was responsible for relationship management, business development and operations. Before that, he spent two and a half years with State Street Trust Company Canada, where he was as a manager of institutional fund accounting and an officer in the foreign exchange department. Chris earned his BBA (honours) from Wilfrid Laurier University and he holds the chartered financial analyst designation. Back to top

> Jamie Colliver
Jamie is partner at Integra Capital Management where he heads Integra Global Advisors and is responsible for the institutional marketing and business development of that division. Integra Global Advisors is a joint venture between Integra and several world-class investment management firms, including Acadian Asset Management. With over 27 years experience in the financial services industry, Jamie was a founding partner, president and head of sales and distribution for a Canadian mutual fund company. He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and has numerous industry designations. Back to top

> Jean-François Courville
Jean-François is managing director of State Street Global Markets and principal officer at State Street Bank and Trust Company - Canada Branch. He is also a managing director of State Street Associates. He is responsible for the financial intermediation and e-finance activities in Canada, including foreign exchange trading and sales, money-market trading, balance sheet management, as well as currency advisory and the Global Link e-finance activities. Before joining State Street in 1996, he was a money market, currency and currency derivative trader, and currency strategist with a major Canadian bank in Montreal and England. Jean-François holds a bachelor of commerce in finance and international business from McGill University and has a CFA designation. Back to top

> Stefan Cowell
Stefan is the senior portfolio analyst at the Workers’ Compensation Board of Alberta, assisting in the management of its $4-billion investment portfolio. > Robert Daigneault
Robert is a director with the institutional client services team of CDP Capital - World Markets. In this role, he is responsible for relationship management in eastern Canada and the United States. Prior to joining CDP Capital in 2001, he was with Computershare Trust Company (previously Montreal Trust) as assistant vice-president responsible for client relationships. Over the last 10 years, he has worked with a diverse institutional client base in areas such as custody services, DC plan administration, shareholder services and employee stock purchase and stock option plans. Bill is a senior vice-president of Lazard Asset Management, LLC and is based in the firm's main office in New York. He is responsible for Lazard's institutional clients in Canada, South Africa and for select clients in the United States. He has over 20 years of experience in the investment business. > James Donald
James is a senior vice-president of Lazard Asset Management LLC and head of Lazard's emerging markets equity portfolio team. He is based in New York. Prior to joining Lazard in 1996, James was a member of Mercury Asset Management's emerging market equity team from 1992 to 1996, and international equity team from 1985 to 1992. > Mark Doyle
Mark is responsible for business development and client service at Barclays Global Investors Canada Limited. He began working in the investment industry in 1985. Prior to joining BGI in early 2000, Mark worked for a large Canadian investment management firm, specializing in indexed and quantitative investment management services, where he was responsible for marketing and client service for institutional investors. Mark has a BA in economics from the University of Western Ontario and an MBA from the University of Toronto. He is a member of AIMR and holds the CFA designation. Back to top

> Chris Draper
Chris joined the CPP Investment Board in January 2001. His responsibilities include conducting research to support the development of investment policies, value-added strategies and risk management. Prior to joining the CPP Investment Board, Chris spent four years at Frank Russell Canada where he was a senior research analyst in the consulting department. He was responsible for conducting asset liability analysis, creating quantitative investment tools and assisting in the development of investment policies for large pension funds. Chris is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and is a CFA charter holder. He received a bachelor of arts in economics from the University of Toronto. Back to top

> Pierre Drolet
Pierre is currently coordinator of pension fund investments for Domtar Inc., a portfolio of approximately $800 million. Prior to this assignment, he was managing the bond portfolio for the pension fund. Before joining Domtar in 1996, Pierre worked for STCUM (Montréal Transit Corporation) and for the Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec where he participated in the development and implementation of Value at Risk models and worked as an analyst in the fixed income department. Pierre has a master of finance from École des Hautes Études Commerciales in Montréal. Back to top

> Philip Falls
Philip is assistant director, investments for the IWA – Forest Industry Pension Plan and for the IWA – Forest Industry Ltd. Plan. He recently joined the plans following 20 years of corporate treasury, insurance, trust and pension institutional fund management experience. > Marija Finney
Marija is vice-president, client relationships for CDP Capital - World Markets and is based in the Toronto office. She is responsible for institutional business development and relationship management in both Canada and the United States. Prior to joining CDP Capital in 2002, she was vice-president, institutional marketing at FranklinTempleton Institutional and a senior client service officer at Barclays Global Investors Canada Limited. With over 17 years of experience in the financial services industry, her background also includes seven years at The Toronto Stock Exchange. > David Finstad
David is the senior manager, external funds for Alberta Revenue, where he is involved in the management of over $11 billion in fund-of-funds assets for the Province of Alberta. He has previous experience as a plan sponsor with the Workers' Compensation Board-Alberta and as a quantitative analyst with Frank Russell Canada. > Paul Flanagan
Paul is portfolio manager, fixed income for the Workers' Compensation Board of British Columbia. He is responsible for the day to day management of the Board's various bond portfolios. Prior to joining the Board, Paul was a vice-president with Merrill Lynch Canada and Scotia Capital Markets where he worked in Toronto, Tokyo and London before settling in Vancouver.  Paul holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Western Ontario and a M.Sc. in management from Boston University. > Ken Froot
Professor Froot is the André R. Jakurski professor of business administration at Harvard University's Graduate School of Business. He teaches courses in capital markets, international finance, and risk management. He has taught executive education programs at MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, in addition to his regular teaching of MBAs and PhDs. Professor Froot’s research covers a range of topics in finance and international economics. He is editor of the Journal of International Financial Management and Accounting and associate editor of the Journal of International Economics. He is a member of the American Finance Association and the American Economics Association. Professor Froot received his BA from Stanford University and his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. Back to top

> Bruce Grantier
Bruce is vice-president, pension assets at Scotiabank. In this role, he is responsible for supporting the management of the asset side of Scotiabank's pension funds. Bruce has a BASc from the University of Toronto, an MBA from York University and is a CFA charterholder. He is a member of the Pension Investment Advisory Committee of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, the Pension Investment Association of Canada's Investment Practices Committee and a trustee of the Havergal College Foundation. > Paul Grisé
Paul is senior vice-president, investment management and chief investment officer of the Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP). Prior to this appointment, Paul worked as HOOPP's vice-president, investment strategy. He joined HOOPP in 1999 with more than 30 years of investment experience in the insurance, trust and investment management industries. Paul is a member of the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts, the Association for Investment Management and Research, and is on the board of the Pension Investment Association of Canada. > Emilian Groch
Emilian joined the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund Board (ATRF) in 1994 as executive director and is responsible for the operation and management of ATRF. ATRF provides retirement benefits, information services and asset management for 62,000 Alberta teachers, inactive teachers and pensioners. He is a member of The City of Edmonton Investment Committee, the government relations committee of the Pension Investment Association of Canada and an initial director of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance. He has an honours B.Sc. (applied mathematics in statistics) and a certificate of employee benefits administration from the University of Alberta. Back to top

> Jeffrey Grossman
Jeff is senior vice-president of equity trading for State Street Global Markets, LLC. He is responsible for coordinating the business development and sales efforts for SSB. He formerly held a similar position at Securities Lending where he was responsible for marketing the securities lending product to State Street’s Global Custody clients as well as prospective new clients. Jeff joined State Street in 1995 after three years at Fidelity Investments where he was senior vice-president responsible for sales of electronic trading and institutional clearing. Jeff received a bachelor’s degree in liberal Arts from Colgate University and an MBA from Pace University. Back to top

> Dr. Stanley Hamilton
Stan is the Philip H. White professor of urban land economics, and senior associate dean, faculty of commerce and business administration, University of British Columbia. He has had extensive teaching and research experience in the area of real estate analysis and valuation. His current research interests include the role of real estate in portfolios and pension governance and administration. Stan is presently the director of the Bureau of Asset Management at UBC and the chair of the board of trustees of the UBC Faculty Pension Plan. He is also a trustee of CREIT, a real estate investment trust. Stan is the author of several books, monographs and articles. Back to top

> Rob Heinkel
Rob is the PMF alumni professor of finance at the University of British Columbia. He is the faculty supervisor for the UBC Portfolio Management Foundation and oversees investments for the UBC Faculty Pension Plan, the Healthcare Benefit Trust and the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust. Rob is a past-director of the UBC Bureau of Asset Management and currently sits on advisory boards for the B.C. Securities Commission and the B.C. Provincial Treasury. Rob received his PhD in finance from UC Berkeley in 1979 and his research interests span investment management and corporate finance. Back to top

> Grace Huang
Grace is an analyst and portfolio manager with the corporate bonds team of CDP Capital World Markets. Based in the Montreal office, she is responsible for the team’s investment activities in Asian corporate bonds. Prior to joining CDP Capital in 2001, Grace was an assistant manager with Credit Agricole in China, where she supervised the credit function of the bank’s corporate banking activities in southern China. Before that, she was an investment analyst with the Bank of China. Grace holds a bachelor of economics (in international finance) from Fudan University in Shanghai, a master of business administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario and is a CFA charterholder. > Peter Jarvis
Peter is a vice-president with the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board (OMERS), and is responsible for the management of all fixed income programs, cash management, and the development and implementation of OMERS Alternative Strategies program. He is also a part of the management team responsible for financial management of the total fund. Prior to OMERS, Peter was vice-president of fixed income at TAL and vice-president and director in charge of trading at Scotia McLeod. A CFA and past president of the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts, he graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA in economics. > Bob Kamp
Bob is director of investments for TELUS Corp. He heads a group responsible for managing a broadly diversified portfolio of investments ($2.9 billion) for some of the defined benefits plans of the TELUS group of companies. Prior to joining TELUS in 1993, he spent 20 years in investment management and research with the Alberta Treasury and the Ontario Treasury. Back to top

> Claire Kyle
Claire is senior manager of the Bank of Montreal’s pension fund. Prior to her current position, she worked in both the United States and Canada in a variety of fields, including private equity investments, mergers and acquisitions, corporate advisory, economics and strategy, and pension fund management. She holds the CFA designation and is presently the chairperson of the Pension Investment Association of Canada (PIAC). Back to top

> Nancy Kyle
Nancy is a senior vice-president, director and a member of the executive committee of Capital Guardian Trust Company (CGTC). She is also president and a director of Capital Guardian (Canada), Inc. and a senior vice-president of Capital International Inc.'s Emerging Markets Growth Fund. Nancy is an international equity and emerging markets portfolio manager and as chair of the CGTC international subcommittee she helps coordinate the asset allocation process for global balanced and multi-product services. Prior to joining the company in 1991, Nancy was a managing director at J.P. Morgan Investment Management Inc. She has a BA in political science from Connecticut College and did graduate work in international political science at the London School of Economics. Back to top

> Jim MacDonald
Before coming to Canadian Investment Review, Jim was the managing editor of Advisor.ca, part of The ADVISOR Group at Rogers Media. Jim joined Rogers in November 2000. A journalist since 1987, Jim has worked in a variety of editorial positions including reporter/editor of Global Stratagems, the media unit of the mutual fund company Global Strategy, as well as reporter/editor with The Canadian Press-Broadcast News and as wire service editor with Standard Broadcast News. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto and has a broadcasting diploma from Centennial College in Toronto. Back to top

> Richard MacDonald
Richard is manager, pension fund administration for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). He has held various senior positions in the Finance and Treasury Departments within CMHC. He formulates and directs the activities as they relate to actuarial, performance measurement, asset mix and corporate governance for the plan. Prior to CMHC, Richard was the controller and treasurer of Loto Canada Inc. He is a chartered accountant and holds a number of certificates in pension plan administration. Back to top

> John Mackinnon
John is currently the director, pension investment finance and administration with the new Canada Post Pension Fund. Since 1985 he has also worked in Ottawa as CFO for the Civil Service Co-Operative Credit Society and director of corporate finance in the treasury of Canada Post. Previously, John had worked in treasury and corporate finance at Imperial Oil and corporate and government banking at the Bank of Montreal. John is the founding president of TMAC and is a member of FEI and the Pension Investment Association of Canada. Back to top

> Jacques Marleau
Jacques is director, financing, treasury and pension funds for the City of Montreal and president of the board of trustees for the city’s pension funds. Previously, he served at the Finance Department of the City of Montreal where he was responsible for budget and planning. Jacques has also worked as an economist for the Quebec government and the Bank of Canada. Back to top

> Giulio Martini
Giulio joined Bernstein in 1985 as a senior economist concentrating on U.S. research. He assumed his current role of senior portfolio manager and international economist in 1992. He is involved with a number of Bernstein’s investment policy groups including, global, global balanced, international and emerging markets, Canadian fixed income, and European and U.K. equity. Prior to joining Bernstein, he conducted economic research for the Institute for Employment Policy at Boston University, where he was also a lecturer in economics. Giulio earned a BA from the University of Colorado in 1977 and an MAPE from Boston University in 1985. He has completed all course and examination requirements for the PhD program. Back to top

> Hayes Miller
Hayes is a member of both the global equity group and the strategic policy group, and the head of the North American investment management team at Baring Asset Management. In this role, he has developed country screening models for the company’s global and EAFE equity products. Hayes joined Baring Asset Management in 1994 as a portfolio manager with responsibility for global equities. In 1997 he was appointed a member of the North American investment management team and became the head of the team in 2001. Hayes has a BA in economics and political science from Vanderbilt University, and received his CFA designation in 1989. Back to top

Tricia joined Rogers Media in 2001 as conference manager. Currently she oversees conferences within the Financial and Healthcare Services Group. She brings to her position more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality and retail industries with an emphasis on special events planning, marketing and customer service evaluation. > Sandra Nuttall
Sandra is senior vice-president of AllianceBernstein where she is responsible for marketing and client servicing of the company’s clients in Canada. Prior to joining Alliance in 1996, Sandra was a senior consultant in the asset-consulting group of Towers Perrin where she worked with clients on a variety of issues, including the development of investment policy, manager structure, and governance issues. > Randall J.P. O'Leary
Randall joined Baring Asset Management in 1998 where he is currently senior vice-president and managing director, Canada. Prior to joining Baring Asset Management, he was director of marketing for Seamark Asset Management. He also managed a number of specialty functions such as performance measurement and portfolio analytics at Royal Trust. Randall received his B.Comm. finance and honours BA in economics from St. Mary's University in Halifax and recently completed graduate studies in international finance and business with the Edinburgh Business School in Scotland. Paul is plan manager and chief executive officer for the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology (CAAT) Pension Plan. Prior to joining the CAAT Pension Plan in 1995, he spent 13 years at The Bank of Nova Scotia where, as director of pensions, he was responsible for the design and administration of the bank’s worldwide pension programs. Paul has made presentations, written articles, and taught extensively in the areas of pensions and benefit design, administration and governance. He has an MBA from Queen’s University. Back to top

Tim Pardee
Tim is regional vice-president for Western Canada at RBC Global Services, Institutional and Investor Services. In this role he is responsible for sales and relationship management for RBC Global Services' Western Canadian operations in Calgary and Vancouver. > Jai Parihar
Jai is currently acting chief investment officer at Alberta Revenue where he is responsible for $39 billion in assets and reports to the deputy minister of Alberta Revenue. In 28 years with the province of Alberta, Jai has held a number of positions within the Investment Management Division, including director of structured investments. His previous responsibilities have included portfolio analysis and research, investment products, debt programs and bond trading operations. Hal is the investment officer of the Prince Edward Island Provincial Treasury. In this role he acts as administrator to the external investment managers that invest the funds of the Province’s MasterTrust, which includes the pension assets of the Island’s civil servants, teachers and members of the legislative assembly. Dr. Rentz is an associate professor of finance and business economics in the School of Management at the University of Ottawa. > Dr. Bruce Resnick
Dr. Resnick is the Joseph M. Bryan Jr. professor of banking and finance at the Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University. Previously, he taught at Indiana University, the University of Minnesota, and California State University. He has also served as a visiting professor at the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration in Finland. Dr. Resnick teaches MBA courses in the areas of investments, portfolio management, and international financial management. His research interests include market efficiency studies of options and financial futures markets and empirical tests of asset pricing models. Tom is president and chief executive officer of the Teachers’ Retirement Allowances Fund (TRAF) of Manitoba. He has held this position since 1999. In this role he is primarily responsible for overseeing the administration of the pension plan for Manitoba’s 29,000 current, former and retired teachers and supervising the investments of its assets. Previously, Tom spent 25 years in pensions and benefits with The Manitoba Teachers’ Society. He currently serves on the board of directors of Greystone Capital Management Inc. and the Association of Canadian Pension Management (ACPM).
