Dinner Speaker: Margaret Wente

Margaret Wente is one of Canada's leading columnists. As a writer for The Globe and Mail, she provokes heated debate with her views on health care, education, and social issues. She is this year's winner of the National Newspaper Award for column-writing.

Ms. Wente has had a diverse career in Canadian journalism as both a writer and an editor. She has edited two leading business magazines, Canadian Business and ROB Magazine. She has also been editor of the Globe's business section, the ROB, and managing editor of the paper. Her columns have appeared in the Globe since 1992. For the past two years she has been writing full-time for the paper, and she is a frequent commentator on television and radio.

Ms. Wente was born in Chicago and moved to Toronto with her family when she was in her teens. She has won numerous journalism awards. She holds a BA from the University of Michigan, and an MA in English from the University of Toronto.

 

Dr. Thomas Åstebro
Dr. Åstebro conducts research in the economics of technological change and entrepreneurship. He has recently published in The Economic Journal and Journal of Lending and Credit Risk Management. He is frequently invited to give speeches on the subject of assessing new ventures. Dr. Åstebro is the originator of a patent pending credit scoring software and has started three companies. He received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and holds two degrees in engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

 

Stephen Brown
Stephen is David S. Loeb Professor of Finance and undergraduate program director of finance studies at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University. He joined the faculty in 1986 after successive appointments at the AT&T Pension Fund, and associate professor at Yale University. He has served on the board of directors of the American Finance Association, was a founding editor of the Review of Financial Studies and is currently a member of the board of the Society of Quantitative Analysis. He is a managing editor of the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and has served on the editorial board of The Journal of Finance. He has published numerous articles and four books on finance and economics related areas. Stephen has both an MBA and PhD from the University of Chicago.

 

John Eckert
John is chairman of the Canadian Venture Capital Association. He is also a managing partner of McLean Watson Capital Inc, a Toronto-based venture capital firm that invests in and advises technology companies. Previously, John specialized in corporate finance as a vice-president and director of Wood Gundy Inc. He also served for three years as executive director, Capital Markets, of CIBC Wood Gundy Australia Ltd., an investment firm, and a director of CIBC Australia Limited, a merchant bank. John holds a BA and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario.

 

Pierre Gamache
Pierre is vice-president, investor relations, at Cadim, where he is responsible for relations with institutional clients interested in investing in the real estate sector. He is also responsible for developing the fund management products and services offered by CDP Capital – Real Estate Group. Pierre joined Cadim’s team in 1998 as managing director, new markets. In that capacity, he contributed to the development and application of Cadim’s investment strategies in Central Europe, Latin America and Asia. Pierre has a bachelor of science and a master of environmental studies from the Université du Québec à Montréal. He also has a MBA from Montréal’s École des Hautes Études Commerciales. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute and the International Real Estate Institute.

 

David Gordon
David is vice-president, quantitative investment analysis, at Glenwood Capital Investments, L.L.C., which he joined in 1998. Prior to this, he was a vice-president in the Pension Services Group at Goldman, Sachs & Co. During this time he co-authored Hedge Funds Demystified: Their Potential Role in Institutional Portfolios. David was also an associate actuary at Watson Wyatt Worldwide from mid-1989 through 1996, where he specialized in asset allocation. An associate of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, David graduated from the Wharton School of Business and the University of Pennsylvania in 1989 with a BA and a BS.

 

Victor Koloshuk
Victor is founder, president and CEO of Integrated Asset Management Corp. He is also co-founder and chairman of Integrated Partners. From 1975 to 1988, he was vice-president and director of Scotia McLeod, specializing in corporate finance, mergers, acquisitions and merchant banking. In 1988, Victor co-founded the merchant bank Koloshuk Farrugia Corp. and, in 1989, The Poplar Corporation. He also spent five years as a top-ranked security analyst with Wood Gundy. Victor has a B.Sc. in physics and an MBA from McGill University. He received his CFA charter in 1975.

 

Steven Michaels
Steven is senior vice-president and managing director, high yield at Financial Management Advisors Inc. (FMA). He joined the company in 1991. In his current role he is principally responsible for the management of the U.S. portfolio. Steven has 14 years of investment experience, including the last 11 years dealing with high yield investments. He has a bachelor of science from Jacksonville University and an MBA from the University of Southern California.

 

Reagan Pratt
Reagan is senior vice-president and portfolio manager for Heitman’s public securities division, where he is responsible for co-managing a $1 billion portfolio of real estate securities for institutional client base. Reagan joined Heitman in 1993 as vice-president of investment research for the firm’s private equity division, where he was responsible for macroeconomic research and the analysis of the apartment and industrial sectors. Prior to joining Heitman, Reagan headed the West Coast office of Clayton Research Associates, one of Canada’s premier real estate and economic consultants. He holds an MS in business administration (urban land economics) from the University of British Columbia and a BA in economics/finance and urban geography from the University of Guelph.

 

Todd Pulvino
Todd is a member of the finance faculty at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, and is a founding principal of CNH Partners, a merger arbitrage hedge fund. He has served as a consultant for funds of hedge funds where he evaluated event-driven managers. Todd has also served on the finance faculty at Harvard Business School. His research is published in top academic finance journals including the Journal of Finance. Todd holds PhD and AM degrees in business economics from Harvard University. He also holds BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering. Prior to completing his doctoral work, Todd worked as a design engineer in the aerospace industry.

 

Craig Russell
Craig is a managing director and global head of sales and marketing for DB Absolute Return Strategies (DB ARS). He is responsible for the product development and distribution of fiduciary DB hedge fund products worldwide. Prior to his current role, Craig was responsible for the sales and product development of quantitative equity and asset allocation products. He also managed the New York currency trading business within the Global Markets Proprietary business at Bankers Trust Company (a DeAM predecessor company) and served as a global fixed income and currency portfolio manager. Craig has a BS in engineering from the University of Michigan.

 

Dr. John J. Schmitz
Dr. Schmitz is an expert in the research, development and implementation of quantitative investment management processes. He has extensive practical experience including several senior money management and financial consulting positions. He has also done extensive research and publishing in the areas of investments and portfolio management. Dr. Schmitz holds a BE.Sc. in mechanical engineering and a BA in economics from the University of Western Ontario, a MA in economics from the University of Toronto, a PhD in finance from the Ivey School of Business and is a CFA.

 

Ken Stemme
Ken joined American Express Asset Management as a senior vice-president and managing director of American Express Alternative Investments in January 2002. His team is responsible for the management of American Express Hedge Fund of Fund products. Ken has over ten years of experience in the selection and monitoring of hedge funds and building hedge fund portfolios. His most recent position was with CIBC World Markets in New York and previous to that he was with Harris Associates in Chicago. He has a BA in mathematics and economics from Cornell University, an MBA with high honours from DePaul University and has received his chartered financial analyst designation.
