Dr. Thomas Åstebro
Dr. Åstebro conducts research in the economics of technological change and entrepreneurship. He has recently published in The Economic Journal and Journal of Lending and Credit Risk Management. He is frequently invited to give speeches on the subject of assessing new ventures. Dr. Åstebro is the originator of a patent pending credit scoring software and has started three companies. He received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and holds two degrees in engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
Lori Bak
Lori is the publisher of Canadian Investment Review and associate publisher of Benefits Canada and Avantages at Rogers Media, Healthcare and Financial Publishing. She has worked at Rogers Media as a business journalist and editor for 16 years, most recently as editorial director of Rogers’ financial publications and past editor of Benefits Canada. Lori is an active member of the Association of Canadian Pension Management (ACPM).
Stephen Brown
Stephen is David S. Loeb Professor of Finance and undergraduate program director of finance studies at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University. He joined the faculty in 1986 after successive appointments at the AT&T Pension Fund, and associate professor at Yale University. He has served on the board of directors of the American Finance Association, was a founding editor of the Review of Financial Studies and is currently a member of the board of the Society of Quantitative Analysis. He is a managing editor of the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and has served on the editorial board of The Journal of Finance. He has published numerous articles and four books on finance and economics related areas. Stephen has both an MBA and PhD from the University of Chicago.
Michael Butera
Michael is director, external portfolios for the pension investment division at Canada Post Corporation. In this role he is involved in virtually all areas of the fund’s investment activities. His responsibilities include investment policy and asset allocation, manager selection and structure and monitoring fund performance. Prior to joining Canada Post, Michael was an asset management consultant for over 13 years. He is a graduate of Brock University and has participated in a number of investment conferences.
Caroline Cakebread
Caroline is the editor of Canadian Investment Review. She joined Rogers Media in May 2001. From 1998 to 2001, she was manager of investor education at the Toronto Stock Exchange. Caroline is an active member of the Association of Canadian Pension Management (ACPM) as part of the Strategic Communications Committee. She is also a member of the Education and Outreach Committee of Women in Capital Markets. Caroline holds an MA and a PhD in English from the University of Birmingham and a BA from the University of Toronto.
Michael Campbell
Michael is manager, pension and employee funds for Imperial Oil Limited where he is responsible for investment strategy, plan funding and administration. Prior to joining Imperial Oil’s pension group, Michael worked in the areas of corporate finance, pipeline operations, insurance, cash management, corporate acquisitions and rate regulation. He holds undergraduate and graduate business degrees from the University of Toronto.
Julie Cays
Julie has been director, external managers at Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) since September 2001. Before that she worked at CIBC for 16 years in various corporate treasury roles, most recently as director, pension investments. Julie has a BA in economics from the University of Waterloo and received her CFA designation in 1989. Julie is active in PIAC as a member of both the corporate governance and member services committees. She is also chair of the Girl Guides of Canada’s portfolio review committee.
Jamie Colliver
Jamie is partner at Integra Capital Management where he heads Integra Global Advisors and is responsible for the institutional marketing and business development of that division. Integra Global Advisors is a joint venture between Integra and several world-class investment management firms, including Heitman Real Estate Investment Management. With over 27 years experience in the financial services industry, Jamie was a founding partner, president and head of sales and distribution for a Canadian mutual fund company. Prior to that he was managing director and global head of fixed income sales and marketing for Scotia Capital Markets in Toronto. He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and has numerous industry designations.
Stefan Cowell
Stefan is the senior portfolio analyst at the Workers’ Compensation Board of Alberta, assisting in the management of its $4 billion investment portfolio. He is also the president of the Edmonton Society of Financial Analysts. Stefan holds the CFA designation and is currently completing his MBA from Queen’s University.
Rudy Dabideen
Rudy is currently managing director of Ashford Capital Canada, a full-service investment consulting firm for selected clients (ICI Canada). Most recently, he was the director of investments for the $ 4.1 billion fund of the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology Pension Plan (CAAT). He is past chairman at the Pension Investment Association of Canada (PIAC), and was the past chair of the investment practices committee at PIAC. Rudy is a graduate of the University of Toronto. He is also a certified management accountant and a chartered financial analyst.
Michael Doran
Michael is managing director, North American equities at University of Toronto Asset Management (UTAM), which he joined in 2000. His responsibilities include selection and monitoring of external North American equity managers, as well as management of some specialized in-house equity portfolios. Prior to joining UTAM, Michael managed a wide range of domestic and global equity portfolios at a quantitative investment firm in Toronto. He holds an MBA in finance from York University and is a chartered financial analyst.
John Eckert
John is chairman of the Canadian Venture Capital Association. He is also a managing partner of McLean Watson Capital Inc, a Toronto-based venture capital firm that invests in and advises technology companies. Previously, John specialized in corporate finance as a vice-president and director of Wood Gundy Inc. He also served for three years as executive director, Capital Markets, of CIBC Wood Gundy Australia Ltd., an investment firm, and a director of CIBC Australia Limited, a merchant bank. John holds a BA and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario.
George Engman
George is president and CEO of Integrated Partners. Previously, he formed and headed the merchant banking portfolio of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan from 1991 to 1996. He was also the founding portfolio manager of private equities for the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System. George is a past director of Onex Corporation, Maple Leaf Foods Inc., Sun Media Corporation and Maple Leaf Gardens. He has an honour B.Sc. in mathematics from the University of London and an MBA from York University.
Philip Falls
Philip is assistant director of investments at IWA-Forest Industry Pension and Ltd. Plans. In this role he works with the director to manage the investments of the $2.0 billion multi-employer pension plan. Previously, he was vice-president and treasurer of investment management at The Loewen Group Inc. He has also held positions at William M. Mercer, Connor, Clark and Lunn and the Canadian National Railway Investment Division. Philip’s professional affiliations include PIAC, AIMR and the Vancouver Society of Financial Analysts. He has an MBA from the University of Western Ontario and is a CFA.
Leona Fields
Leona is the manager of the pension fund at York University. In this role, she manages all functions relating to the York University Pension Fund, which currently has assets of approximately $880 million. Leona also acts as secretary for the York University Pension Fund Board of Trustees and the subcommittee on investment performance. With over 13 years in the industry, Leona has experience with investment policy development, performance evaluation, pension governance, fiduciary education, and the actuarial field.
Marija Finney
Marija joined CDP Capital in 2002, as vice-president, client relationships and is based in the Toronto office. She is responsible for institutional business development and relationship management in both Canada and the United States. Prior to joining CDP Capital she was vice-president, institutional marketing at Franklin Templeton Institutional and a senior client service officer at Barclays Global Investors Canada Limited. With over 17 years’ experience in the financial services industry, her background also includes seven years at The Toronto Stock Exchange. Marija is a member of the Association for Canadian Pension Management.
David C. Finstad
David is the senior manager, External Funds for Alberta Revenue, where he is involved in the management of over $9 billion in fund-of-funds assets for the Province of Alberta. He has previous experience as a plan sponsor with the Workers’ Compensation Board-Alberta and as a quantitative analyst with Frank Russell Canada. He is a chartered financial analyst and holds an M.Sc. in finance from the London School of Economics.
Stephen Foerster
Stephen is a professor of finance at the Richard Ivey School of Business, The University of Western Ontario. He has numerous publications in academic journals, such as The Journal of Finance and Journal of Financial Economics, as well as practitioner-oriented journals and books. He recently completed the book Financial Management: A Primer and has co-authored the book Cases in Financial Management. Stephen is a member of the advisory board of Canadian Investment Review, a director and chair of the Investment Committee of Foundation Western and a member of the advisory board of Northwest Mutual Funds. He has an MA and PhD from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and has obtained the CFA designation.
Pierre Gamache
Pierre is vice-president, investor relations, at Cadim, where he is responsible for relations with institutional clients interested in investing in the real estate sector. He is also responsible for developing the fund management products and services offered by CDP Capital – Real Estate Group. Pierre joined Cadim’s team in 1998 as managing director, new markets. In that capacity, he contributed to the development and application of Cadim’s investment strategies in Central Europe, Latin America and Asia. Pierre has a bachelor of science and a master of environmental studies from the Université du Québec à Montréal. He also has a MBA from Montréal’s École des Hautes Études Commerciales. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute and the International Real Estate Institute.
David Gordon
David is vice-president, quantitative investment analysis, at Glenwood Capital Investments, L.L.C., which he joined in 1998. Prior to this, he was a vice-president in the Pension Services Group at Goldman, Sachs & Co. During this time he co-authored Hedge Funds Demystified: Their Potential Role in Institutional Portfolios. David was also an associate actuary at Watson Wyatt Worldwide from mid-1989 through 1996, where he specialized in asset allocation. An associate of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, David graduated from the Wharton School of Business and the University of Pennsylvania in 1989 with a BA and a BS.
Janet Greenwood
Janet is managing partner and director of investment services at Aurion Capital Management Inc., a firm which manages domestic institutional portfolios and the overall multi-manager investment program for the Shell Canada Pension Fund. She was formerly director, investment research for Shell Canada Pension Fund Management Inc. Areas of responsibility include investment research, asset class management, investment strategies and manager selection/oversight for Shell's DB and DC investment structure. She is also involved in portfolio analytics and the management of a broad range of investment services provided to Aurion's institutional clients.
Rabinder Grewal
Rabinder is an investment analyst at the University of Toronto Asset Management Corporation. Her responsibilities include contributing to the preparation and analysis of investment and financial reports, assisting managing directors with the due diligence process in both the public and private investment manager search programs as well as in-house trading capabilities. Rabinder received a bachelor of commerce from U of T and is a level II candidate for the chartered financial analyst program.
Wally Hassenrueck
Wally is the director, treasury for CanWest Global Communications Corp. In this role, she is responsible for developing and administering asset and debt management policies and programs. She has held various positions in treasury and corporate finance in the public sector, energy sector and media sector. Wally holds an MBA from the University of Manitoba.
Eric Innes
Eric is chairman and chief investment officer for YMG Capital Management. The first 20 years of his investment career were spent trading bonds and managing bond portfolios for McLeod Young Weir and Royal Trust. In 1983 Eric and his partner founded YMG, which currently manages over $13 billion in investment portfolios for pension plans, mutual funds and other financial institutions. Eric oversees YMG’s asset allocation and the firm’s fixed income strategies, as well as directing marketing and client service activities. He was educated at Bishop University and graduated with an honours BA in economics in 1971.
Peter S. Jarvis
Peter is a vice-president with the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board (OMERS), and is responsible for the management of all fixed income programs, cash management, and the development of OMERS approach to alternative assets. He is also a part of the management team responsible for financial management of the total fund. Prior to OMERS, Peter was vice-president of fixed income at TAL and vice-president and director in charge of trading at Scotia McLeod in London, England. A CFA and past president of the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts, he graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA in economics. He is also a fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI).
Larry Johnson
Larry is director of pension investments for Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. and is responsible for managing C$3 billion in retirement plan assets, primarily in Canada, but also in the U.S. and the U.K. He assumed this position in mid-1999 and has been employed by Abitibi and predecessor companies for over 22 years, primarily in strategic planning, marketing, and financial analysis roles. Larry is an American and holds certified public accountant and certified management accountant designations.
Richard Johnston
Richard is currently the chief investment officer of the Independent Order of Foresters (IOF). Prior to the IOF, Richard managed the investment department of the Aetna Life Insurance Company. He has over 20 years of investment experience, including fixed income and equities as well as extensive involvement in the venture capital industry. Richard is a member of the Board of Directors for MDS Capital Corporation, the largest venture capital investor in biotech and life sciences in Canada. Richard holds an MBA and CFA designation.
Bob Kamp
Bob is director of investments for TELUS Corp. He heads a group responsible for managing a broadly diversified portfolio of investments ($2.9 billion) for some of the defined benefits plans of the TELUS group of companies. Prior to joining TELUS in 1993, he spent 20 years in investment management and research with the Alberta Treasury and the Ontario Treasury.
Michael Keenan
Michael is the director of policy and research for Bimcor Inc., a Canadian pension investment manager. Prior to joining Bimcor in January 2001, Michael spent 10 years at the federal Department of Finance, principally in the Financial Markets Division where he was involved in government financing, international management, and treasury risk management, as well as domestic debt management.
Victor Koloshuk
Victor is founder, president and CEO of Integrated Asset Management Corp. He is also co-founder and chairman of Integrated Partners. From 1975 to 1988, he was vice-president and director of Scotia McLeod, specializing in corporate finance, mergers, acquisitions and merchant banking. In 1988, Victor co-founded the merchant bank Koloshuk Farrugia Corp. and, in 1989, The Poplar Corporation. He also spent five years as a top-ranked security analyst with Wood Gundy. Victor has a B.Sc. in physics and an MBA from McGill University. He received his CFA charter in 1975.
Gordon Kosokowsky
Gordon joined CDP Capital in 2001, as director for the Toronto office having responsibility for new institutional business development and relationship management with clients in Canada and the United States. Prior to joining CDP Capital he held senior business development and relationship management positions at Royal Trust. With over 12 years of financial services experience in the financial services industry, his background also includes international trade finance and foreign exchange. Gordon is a graduate of McMaster University and has completed numerous industry courses and accreditations.
Claire Kyle
Claire is senior manager of the Bank of Montreal’s pension fund. Prior to her current position, she worked in both the United States and Canada in a variety of fields, including private equity investments, mergers and acquisitions, corporate advisory, economics and strategy, and pension fund management. She holds the CFA designation and is presently the chairperson of the Pension Investment Association of Canada (PIAC).
Gilles Lachance
Gilles is currently the pension funds treasurer for the City of Montreal. He has worked for the City for 26 years. For the last 13 years, he has been responsible for the accounting and investments of the six pension funds in Montreal. He is also on the board of each pension fund and investment commission. Previously, Gilles worked for the Quebec securities commission, and as a finance teacher at Sherbrooke University. He has an M.Sc. in finance and a bachelor of business administration. Gilles is a member of both PIAC and CPBI.
Ross Laser
Ross is president at Glenwood Capital Investments, L.L.C., which he joined in 1997. Prior to joining Glenwood, he owned a futures local clearing firm. He was also the general partner of several land acquisition deals, a board member for a multi-bank holding company and was instrumental in the formation of private investment ventures, including individual hedge funds. Rob has been a member of the International Monetary Market of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange since 1985. He received a BA from the University of Michigan in 1984.
Tris Lett
Tris is director, Alternative Assets Group, RBC Capital Markets. Previously he was vice-president, Absolute Return Strategies with YMG Capital Management Inc. His working career began at the Ontario Treasury where his responsibilities included policy development of the CPP for the province. In 1983 he co-founded Trafalgar Capital Management, a quantitatively oriented investment counselling firm. In 1989, Tris was elected to the Board of Governors of the Toronto Futures Exchange, and in 1990 became its chair for five years. Tris is currently is a member of the Canadian Investment Review's Advisory Board. He has an honours BA in economics from York University and a master of economics from the London School of Economics in England.
Bruce MacDonald
Bruce is one of the founding shareholders and a director at Integra Capital. Before joining the firm as an active partner, he was president of Boyle Midway Canada, a major manufacturing and consumer goods subsidiary of American Home Products Corp. of New York. Bruce has a bachelor of commerce from Mount Allison University.
Richard MacDonald
Richard is manager, pension fund administration for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. He has held various senior positions in the Finance and Treasury Departments within CMHC. He formulates and directs the activities as they relate to actuarial, performance measurement, asset mix and corporate governance for the plan. Prior to CMHC, Richard was the controller and treasurer of Loto Canada Inc. He is a chartered accountant and holds a number of certificates in pension plan administration.
Ingrid J. Macintosh
Ingrid joined American Express Asset Management in 2001 as a marketing director responsible for introducing and marketing a broad range of investment products to Canadian institutions and consultants. Prior to joining American Express, Ingrid was a principal with Laketon Investment Management, involved in both marketing and client service. Ingrid’s 16 years in the investment industry also include positions at Burns Fry (subsequently Nesbitt Burns) and CIBC World Markets in both fixed income trading and institutional sales positions. Ingrid holds a BA in economics from York University.
Josephine Marks
Josephine is senior vice-president of pensions and group investments at the Maritime Life Assurance Company. Her responsibilities include overall accountability for the pension and institutional investment lines of business as well as asset-liability management responsibilities for Maritime Life’s $9 billion of General Funds. Josephine joined Maritime Life in 2001 with 20 years of experience in the pensions and investment industry at Sun Life of Canada and William M. Mercer. Her previous responsibilities included marketing, finance, client service, portfolio management and investment strategy. Josephine is a FCIA and a CFA.
David Mather
David is executive vice-president at Integrated Asset Management Corp. He has over 25 years experience in marketing, sales, product development and operations in both institutional and retail investment management. His previous roles have included managing director, SEI Investments; managing director, Fidelity Group Pensions; senior vice-president, Elliott & Page; and vice-president, Crown Life Investment Management. David is presently treasurer and member of the Board of Governors at Royal St. George’s College. He is also treasurer and chair of the investment committee for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada Foundation. David has both an honours BA and MA from the University of Waterloo.
Richard McAloney
Richard is the CEO of the Nova Scotia Association of Health Organizations Pension Plan. Previously he was responsible for all investment, pension, benefit, and treasury operations for the Province of Nova Scotia. He is also director of the Pension Investment Association of Canada, director of the Association of Canadian Pension Management, and he was a founding director of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. Richard holds the chartered financial analyst, certified internal auditor, and chartered accountant designations.
Steven Michaels
Steven is senior vice-president and managing director, high yield at Financial Management Advisors Inc. (FMA). He joined the company in 1991. In his current role he is principally responsible for the management of the U.S. portfolio. Steven has 14 years of investment experience, including the last 11 years dealing with high yield investments. He has a bachelor of science from Jacksonville University and an MBA from the University of Southern California.
Peter Mitchell
Peter joined American Express Asset Management (AEAM) in 2000 with 13 years of financial industry experience. As vice-president of AEAM, he is responsible for introducing the firm’s institutional line of strategies, both traditional and alternative, to the consultant and mid-sized corporate marketplace. Originally from Toronto, Peter has held positions in New Zealand as a currency options trader and in New York, where he specialized in institutional equity research sales. He has an undergraduate degree in criminology and an MBA in finance from the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.
Ron Mock
Ron is vice-president, alternative investments, at Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. The Alternative Investments Department is responsible for investments in hedge funds and commodity trading advisors. Ron became involved in the hedge fund industry in 1991 managing institutional hedge fund assets in fixed income market neutral strategies. From 1986 to 1994, Ron was a director at Burns Fry and then Nesbitt Burns. In 1994 Ron and his partners established Phoenix Research and Trading, a hedge fund manager. He has a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto and an MBA from York University.
Mike Moes
As director, business development, RBC Global Services, Mike is responsible for developing strategic relationships with Canada's leading international investment managers and plan sponsors of defined benefit pension plans. He has been with RBC Global Services the past five years and has been dealing with plan sponsors and investment managers for the past 10 years. Mike is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a BA in economics.
Geoffrey Moore
Geoff is director at Deutsche Asset Management where he is responsible for institutional sales and business development in Canada. He is based in Montreal. Geoff joined the company in 2001 with seven years of experience as vice-president and head of the Canadian office for Bank of Ireland Asset Management and research analyst for Brockhouse & Cooper. Geoff is currently on the editorial advisory boards of Benefits Canada and Avantages magazines. He has a BA from McGill University and an MA from the University of Leeds.
Tricia Moore
Tricia joined Rogers Media last year as conference manager. She brings to her position more than 15 years of experience in the hospitality and retail industries with an emphasis on special events planning, marketing and customer service evaluation. She is a graduate of Queen’s University.
Clive Morgan
Clive is the director of York Hedge Fund Strategies, which he founded in 2000 with two partners. Prior to this he was the global practice leader for asset consulting at Towers Perrin, where he specialized in financial management for institutional funds. Clive is a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, a fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and a chartered financial analyst.
Lawrence Newhook
As an associate portfolio manager, derivative instruments at OMERS, Lawrence is responsible for the development and execution of derivative-based solutions in the pursuit of the Fund objectives of investment efficiency, risk management and yield enhancement. Other responsibilities include the management of the OMERS Active Currency Program and the development of the OMERS Absolute Return Strategies Program. Lawrence has a bachelor of commerce in economics from the University of Guelph, an M.Sc. in economics from the University of London and is a chartered financial analyst.
Carlo Novati
Carlo has been the director of pension fund services for Ontario Power Generation’s pension plan since April 2001. He is responsible for governance, compliance and the management of the plan’s external investment managers. Previously, he was responsible for the capital market borrowing activities of Ontario Hydro and Farm Credit Corporation. Carlo has also held various corporate finance positions with Gulf Canada Resources and BCE Inc. He has an engineering degree, an MBA and is a chartered financial analyst.
Hal Parker
Hal is the investment officer of the Prince Edward Island Provincial Treasury. In this role he acts as administrator to the external investment managers that invest the funds of the Province’s MasterTrust, which includes the pension assets of the Island’s civil servants, teachers and members of the legislative assembly. He also directly invests the funds of the province’s Sinking Fund. A native of the province, he has three degrees including an MBA from Dalhousie University.
Michelle Peshko
Michelle joined Brascan Financial this year from Noranda Inc. Brascan Financial acts as the principal investment advisor for the Noranda pension plans. As vice-president, capital markets, she oversees the development and implementation of pension plan policies. From 1994 to 1998, Michelle was part of the Asset Consulting Group at Towers Perrin where she worked with Canadian plan sponsors in the areas of plan structure, manager searches, and investment monitoring and performance. Michelle has an MBA from York University and has earned her chartered financial analyst designation. She is a member of AIMR, the TSFA and PIAC.
Reagan A. Pratt
Reagan is senior vice-president and portfolio manager for Heitman’s public securities division, where he is responsible for co-managing a $1 billion portfolio of real estate securities for institutional client base. Reagan joined Heitman in 1993 as vice-president of investment research for the firm’s private equity division, where he was responsible for macroeconomic research and the analysis of the apartment and industrial sectors. Prior to joining Heitman, Reagan headed the West Coast office of Clayton Research Associates, one of Canada’s premier real estate and economic consultants. He holds an MS in business administration (urban land economics) from the University of British Columbia and a BA in economics/finance and urban geography from the University of Guelph.
Todd Pulvino
Todd is a member of the finance faculty at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, and is a founding principal of CNH Partners, a merger arbitrage hedge fund. He has served as a consultant for funds of hedge funds where he evaluated event-driven managers. Todd has also served on the finance faculty at Harvard Business School. His research is published in top academic finance journals including the Journal of Finance. Todd holds PhD and AM degrees in business economics from Harvard University. He also holds BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering. Prior to completing his doctoral work, Todd worked as a design engineer in the aerospace industry.

Dr. Bill Rentz
Dr. Rentz is an associate professor of finance and business economics in the School of Management at the University of Ottawa. From 1989 until 2002 he was the chairman of the pension plan committee of the Board of Governors of the University of Ottawa. He is co-author of Canadian Financial Management and has published in many different journals. His latest publication is “Can the Next Enron Happen to Your Clients,” Advisor’s Edge, March 2002. He holds a BS in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an AM and PhD in economics from the University of Rochester.
André Robitaille
André is executive director of the University of Quebec's Pension Fund, with responsibility for overseeing the investment of the pension fund and the administration of the benefits. The fund has 8,200 plan members and assets of $1.5 billion. He is an active member of the International Pension Group, the Canadian Pension and Benefit Conference and the Pension Investment Association of Canada.
Dan Rudgers
Dan is a managing director, Alternative Asset Fundraising Group at Deutsche Bank. He is responsible for raising funds for alternative assets including private equity, venture capital, real estate, CDO equity and other privately placed issues. Dan represents both third party and Bank entities in raising funds from U.S. institutional investors including corporate and public pension plans, endowments, foundations, insurance companies, financial institutions, family offices and others. Dan joined the Bank in 1990 (Bankers Trust Company before merger with Deutsche Bank). He holds a bachelor of business administration from Niagara University.
Craig Russell
Craig is a managing director and global head of sales and marketing for DB Absolute Return Strategies (DB ARS). He is responsible for the product development and distribution of fiduciary DB hedge fund products worldwide. Prior to his current role, Craig was responsible for the sales and product development of quantitative equity and asset allocation products. He also managed the New York currency trading business within the Global Markets Proprietary business at Bankers Trust Company (a DeAM predecessor company) and served as a global fixed income and currency portfolio manager. Craig has a BS in engineering from the University of Michigan.
Dr. John J. Schmitz
Dr. Schmitz is an expert in the research, development and implementation of quantitative investment management processes. He has extensive practical experience including several senior money management and financial consulting positions. He has also done extensive research and publishing in the areas of investments and portfolio management. Dr. Schmitz holds a BE.Sc. in mechanical engineering and a BA in economics from the University of Western Ontario, a MA in economics from the University of Toronto, a PhD in finance from the Ivey School of Business and is a CFA.
Larry Seager
Larry is director of pension investment at Kodak Canada Inc. He received his business degree from Ryerson in 1966 and is a certified management accountant. Larry began his career at Kodak in 1968, where he has held various accounting, marketing and management positions.
Tracy Smith
Tracy is assistant editor, conferences for the healthcare and financial division of Rogers Media. Her responsibilities include the management of conference materials and development of the conference web sites. Tracy has an honours BA from McMaster University and a post-graduate diploma in journalism new media from Sheridan College.
Ken Stemme
Ken joined American Express Asset Management as a senior vice-president and managing director of American Express Alternative Investments in January 2002. His team is responsible for the management of American Express Hedge Fund of Fund products. Ken has over ten years of experience in the selection and monitoring of hedge funds and building hedge fund portfolios. His most recent position was with CIBC World Markets in New York and previous to that he was with Harris Associates in Chicago. He has a BA in mathematics and economics from Cornell University, an MBA with high honours from DePaul University and has received his chartered financial analyst designation.
Terri Troy
Terri is director of pension and strategic investments for the Royal Bank of Canada’s multinational pension plans. Her responsibilities include asset mix decisions, investment manager structures and manager monitoring, performance measurement and attribution, risk analytics, compliance monitoring and governance.
Tom Ulrich
Tom is president and chief executive officer of the Teachers’ Retirement Allowances Fund (TRAF) of Manitoba. He has held this position since 1999. In this role he is primarily responsible for overseeing the administration of the pension plan for Manitoba’s 29,000 current, former and retired teachers and supervising the investments of its assets. Previously, Tom spent 25 years in pensions and benefits with The Manitoba Teachers’ Society. He currently serves on the board of directors of Greystone Capital Management Inc. and the Association of Canadian Pension Management (ACPM). He is also a member of PIAC. Tom has both a bachelor and master of education.
Donald D. Weiss
Donald is the chairman and CEO of the Ontario Pension Board, which manages the Public Service Pension Plan in Ontario. This $12 billion fund has approximately 27,000 contributing members and 40,000 pensioners. He is the former executive director of the P.C. Ontario Fund and past president of Morguard Trust Company. Donald’s business career has focused on financial services, investment, banking, real estate finance, development and fundraising. He has a bachelor of commerce from the University of Alberta.
