The Global Investment Conference
April 4-6, 2018
The 2018 Global Investment Conference will take place from April 4-6, 2018 at the Terranea Resort in Racho Palos Verdes, LA. For 23 years, the Global Investment Conference has been a forum for leading Canadian Defined Benefit Plan decision-makers to attend expert sessions on investing in the global context. This year's theme is Global Investing in an Era of Fragmentation and we aim to break down the key themes for the plan sponsors invited to attend.
This conference along with its new academic partner, Simon Fraser University's Beedie School of Business, will bring together experts and thought leaders to discuss unique perspectives and approaches to defined benefit pension fund investing. The Global Investment Conference will present leading edge investment research and will explore new global investment approaches, ideas and unique strategies that benefit large Canadian pension plan organizations.
Who Should Attend this Event? The conference is an exclusive, educational forum that brings together senior representatives of Canadian pension plan sponsors, as well as representatives from the academic and money management communities.
How Do I Attend?Participation is by-invitation-only.
However, a select number of invitations are available.
For invitation information, please email Alison Webb, publisher of Canadian Investment Review, for consideration.
Canadian Investment Review is Canada's leading forum for academics, institutional investors and industry practitioners to exchange ideas on the capital markets, investment and economic theory and the related sociology and demographics. To that end, it publishes articles that offer original ideas based on existing literature and brings new insight to relevant themes and practices within the institutional investment community.
ACADEMIC PARTNERSince the creation of Canada's first Executive MBA in 1968, the Beedie School of Business has championed lifelong learning, productive change and the need to be innovative as we deliver research and teaching that makes an impact. That we have achieved some measure of success is confirmed by our accreditation by the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), and by receiving the EQUIS Quality award from the EFMD (European Federation for Management Development), globally recognized accrediting agencies for business schools. Less than 1% of business schools worldwide have earned both of these international accreditations.

Theme for 2018:
Global Investing in an Era of Fragmentation
Within the space of just two years, the state of global trade has come under threat as countries like the U.S. and the UK seek new deals in the global economy. At the same time, disruptive technologies are shattering old business models, creating new opportunities and new risks for global economies. For investors seeking global diversification, this era of fragmentation creates additional risks as well as a new set of opportunities – the challenge is finding out where they are and how best to access them. The 2017 Global Investment Conference will provide the insights and ideas Canada’s top pension investors need to thrive during this time of tumultuous change.
Our 2018 Keynote Speaker
Nicholas Burns is a former U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, a former U.S. Ambassador to Greece and NATO and a former White House Special Assistant. He is currently a Harvard professor and is seen as one of the most distinguished career diplomats of our time, who served under Democratic and Republican Presidents and offers a bipartisan view of foreign and security affairs and global trends in the 21st century. A preeminent leader, lecturer and writer whose bi-partisan successes have made him one of the most significant voices on globalization, foreign and defense policy, and global strategy today, Nicholas Burns shares powerful insights on America’s future role in international leadership.
For nearly three decades, Burns was at the forefront of shaping and articulating the U.S.’s position on the world stage during times of unprecedented crisis and change—from the collapse of the Soviet Union and end of the Cold War to China, India and Brazil’s rise to power. Serving as the State Department’s third highest ranking official (2005–2008), Burns led negotiations on the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement, negotiated a long-term military assistance agreement with Israel and was the lead U.S. negotiator with China, Russia and Europe on Iran’s nuclear program. Appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Burns led key efforts to secure international support for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and while U.S. Ambassador to Greece, played a major role in trade, investment and closer counter-terrorism ties with that country. Burns is currently the Goodman Professor of Diplomacy and International Relations at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and is Director of the school’s Future of Diplomacy Project. He is also Director of the Aspen Strategy Group, Senior Counselor at the Cohen Group, and serves on the Board of Directors of Entegris, Inc. Providing audiences with a candid look at American diplomacy in action and what lies ahead for U.S. foreign policy, Burns is a widely sought-after media commentator appearing frequently on PBS, FOX, MSNBC, BBC and CNN, and writes frequently for major international publications on foreign affairs.
